    Harris: Dixon denied fair shot

    Harris: Dixon denied fair shot

    By John Harris, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Sunday, August 15, 2010

Dennis Dixon doesn't stand a chance. There's no way he can prove he deserves to start at quarterback if he doesn't practice and play with the starters.

Apparently, the Steelers don't want a fair fight at the most visible position on the team.

Byron Leftwich played with the starters for most of the first half of Saturday night's preseason opener against the Detroit Lions at Heinz Field.

With Ben Roethlisberger sidelined for at least the first four games of the regular season, the Steelers' actions have made it clear that Leftwich will be his replacement.

There has been no real competition between Leftwich and Dixon, because Dixon hasn't practiced with the starters.

Dixon has received plenty of reps in practice. Dixon leads all quarterbacks with 213 total snaps in 11 on 11 team drills. Leftwich is second with 199 snaps. Roethlisberger is third with 189 snaps, followed by Charlie Batch with 59 snaps.

Dixon, however, doesn't practice with the first team. Last night, he didn't play with the first team, either, completing 6 of 7 passes for 128 yards and 1 touchdown.

Dixon hasn't received the same opportunity that Leftwich has had passing to Hines Ward, Mike Wallace and Heath Miller. He doesn't get to play in the same backfield with running back Rashard Mendenhall.

I asked Dixon the other day if he expected the same results playing with backups that he would with the starters.

"I wouldn't say that," he said. "But that's not my decision. All I can control is the reps I get. Whoever I'm with, I want to be able to score."

Dixon entered last night's game at the 4:45 mark of the second quarter. Playing with running back Isaac Redman and wide receivers Arnaz Battle and Emmanuel Sanders, Dixon guided the Steelers to their best drive of the first half and did what Leftwich was unable to do — lead the offense to a touchdown.

The key play was a 51-yard pass to Battle. Rolling left, Dixon found Battle, who slipped a tackle and sped down the sideline.

On first and goal from the 5, Dixon nearly scored on a running play to his right. The ball crossed the goal line, but his knee touched down first. One play later, Redman scored, and the Steelers grabbed a 13-7 lead before play was halted late in the half because of lightning.

Dixon's ability to move the offense in the rain as soon as he stepped on the field bodes well for his future. If not with the Steelers, then possibly with another team.

Dixon adds another element that Leftwich can't offer. He can run as well as pass. Considering how easily the offensive line was shoved around in the first half, Dixon's mobility may come in handy.

Nevertheless, the Steelers feel more comfortable with Leftwich, the veteran, than they do with Dixon, the kid.

The Steelers know what they're getting with Leftwich. He's a former first-round pick who filled in for Roethlisberger two years ago and led the Steelers to a win at Washington.

If Leftwich opens the season 4-0 as the starter, he will have performed better than anticipated. However, there would be no debate about a quarterback controversy when Roethlisberger is eligible to return. That's because Leftwich was acquired to be Roethlisberger's backup.

The Steelers don't know what they have in Dixon, who performed well in his only NFL start at Baltimore last season but lost 20-17 in overtime. At this rate, they might never find out. However, if Dixon opened the season 4-0, his potential as a young quarterback could spark some debate about the Steelers allowing the kid to continue playing.

The Steelers' strategy to limit Dixon's reps with the first team is a safe move, but that doesn't mean it's the right one.

The premise of this whole article is off the mark. I dont believe for a second that the coaching staff has made up their minds about who will start at QB. And i also disagree that Dixon going 4-0 would be a problem for the Steelers.

Exactly, there is no chance that Dixon replaces Ben. I want Dixon to start, but I am not fooling myself for a second as to who is the legitimate starter. I want Dixon to start because the OL is mediocre and you need a QB who can move to evade the rush.

What the writer doesn't include is that Dixon provides little to no threat when he remains in the pocket. Defenses will figure this out quickly and keep a spy in for Dixon. Dixon isn't a long term answer at QB anymore than Leftwich.
The Steelers’ went through seven consecutive drafts (2003-09) without taking an offensive lineman in the first two rounds, the longest such streak by any franchise this century.

Leftwich is a statue...Dixon isn't. Behind this line it's very clear who should start.

Dixon played against UPS drivers. In his 3rd camp? He should dominate them.

All I heard two years ago when Lefty played for Ben is how Lefty gets rid of the ball, how Lefty won't take sacks, and how evil Ben makes the OL look worse than it is with his "playground" style of play.

Oh how the tide has turned based on one quarter for Leftwich last night. Now Ben is out, and the OL suddenly sucks.

Crash, that post made me laugh ....

because you are dead on! In 08 some even tried to justify Lefty's success in a game and a half into an argument that he should be our starter.

What's funny is that while Ben has his faults he is a winner and does what he has to do when he has to do it. He is the most exciting QB playing the game right now. Yes, he sometimes holds on to the ball too long and yes he sometimes takes sacks instead of throwing the ball away but when the game is on the line and the steelers need to score I want Ben in the huddle leading this team.

As many on this site think ... The Rooney's suck, Colbert sucks, Tomlin sucks, the coaches suck, and the players suck.

                but Go Steelers!!!

Lefty hangs onto the ball too long...

Re: Harris: Dixon denied fair shot

I don't understand the love for Dixon. First, he seemed to take off and run far too quickly (which isn't likely to be as effective against starters). Second, once he took off, he didn't keep his eyes up. He had his head down and was looking only to run, taking away his chance of making a big play down field. Third, he seems to have trouble picking apart a defense and making plays from the pocket. Last year, against the Ravens, the Ravens just sat in a cover 2 at the end of the game, and Dixon couldn't handle it, eventually throwing a pick.

I wouldn't mind seeing a few packages for Dixon. Something wildcat-esque, or a few plays designed to get him out of the pocket. But I just can't see the Steelers succeeding with Dixon as a starting QB.

That's another thing. Ben leaves the pocket and uses mobility to find guys and it's "play ground" football and Ben gets bashed for it.

Dixon gets impatient in the pocket against 3rd teamers, and now it's a QB "battle" with Leftwich and people want to see more of him.

                      Why is the criteria different?

Re: Harris: Dixon denied fair shot

                        philly and crash nailed it.

I was yelling at the TV all night while he was in there.

After watching Ben for a few seasons, I would have thought Dixon would have learned something.

He has the escape down, but instead of rolling while a WR breaks open, he looks down and for a space to run. Now he is a fantastic running QB (especially against chumps), but that will not work in the NFL. You cannot have a running starting QB. WHY? Because the better defenses in the NFL WILL get to him and injure him. So he gets a leg injury and you have to rely on the backup. Or he slowly becomes a gimp and then can't run or throw.
He will never start in the league until he can escape, roll and find the WIDE OPEN WRs that he was missing last night. Of his runs, all but 1 should have resulted in a pass. Once he should have jogged for the sticks.
And anyone watching that game and being a long time football fan, should already know this. So if you are pushing for Dixon after that game, you need to go back to the ladies chalk talks to understand the game.
                        Sorry
