Report: Braylon Edwards will escape a suspension

With receiver Santonio Holmes already due to miss the first four games of the 2010 season after his latest violation of the league's substance abuse policy, the Jets have gotten some good news regarding receiver Braylon Edwards.

Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com reports that Edwards won't be suspended after pleading no contest to misdemeanor assault in an incident only days before he was traded by the Browns to the Jets.

Though many expected a suspension of at least one game, the outcome meshes with the precedent set two years ago, after then-Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter received a fine in the amount of one game check after pleading no contest to beating up former Bengals tackle Levi Jones in a Las Vegas casino.

Thus, as to Edwards, we suspect he'll be fined in the amount of one game check, which based on his salary equates to $256,176.47.

The development also is good news for Titans quarterback Vince Young, who faces misdemeanor assault allegations resulting from an incident at a strip club earlier this month.

Commissioner Roger Goodell's decision to suspend Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for six games despite never being arrested suggested that a new attitude to offseason misconduct may apply going forward. The outcome as to Edwards suggests that Goodell will be inclined to inject some consistency into the process of meting out discipline under the Personal Conduct Policy.

That said, look for Steelers fans to cry foul regarding the perceived inconsistency between the treatment of Edwards and Roethlisberger. Still, Edwards was a first-time offender. The Roethlisberger situation proved that repeat occurrences will result in significant consequences.

So if Edwards gets in trouble again, he can expect a suspension. The only open question will be its duration.

Still, Edwards was a first-time offender.
And Ben is a no time offender.

Doesn't matter, Vincent Jackson is a THREE TIME OFFENDER and he hasn't been suspended.

O.J. Simpson would not have received a suspension from Roger Goodell...after all, O.J. was not a repeat offender as he only murdered somebody once!

Edwards and Jackson are not rich, white QBs that Goodell feels he needs to make an example out of because he wants to send a message of impartiality to the other players in the league. Goodel was covering his backside against media criticism of targeting black players who misbehave. Ben gave him an excuse that he jumped all over.

While Goodel was the hatchet man don't underestimate the influence of the Rooney's in Ben's punishment. They gave the commish the greenlight to make an example out of Ben. Do you think Jerry Jones would have been so agreeable to throwing away 25% of their season to the commish to make a statement? Dan Snyder? Al Davis?

Allowing the commish to nail Ben also took heat off the Rooney's and covered their butts for how they dealt with Stupidio Holmes.

                Ben is a white QB?

I'm sorry, I find it funny how people keep referencing race. It wasn't really an issue before when Goodell was handing out suspensions. How many people jumped up and demanded Matt Jones get harsh treatment? Maybe a few but it was mostly jokes... I guess my point is most suspensions don't rub fans the wrong way until it's their teams player getting suspended. When James Harrison had a run in we didn't demand equality... When Jeff Reed had a run in... well, yeah, I do remember some people getting mad but no one was looking for justice. Now that Ben is suspended we want EVERYBODY suspended.

Anyway... Dan Rooney was the head of the search committee that picked Goodell. Maybe that has something to do with our owners cooperation.

NOTHING. And Goodell doesn't get that.

When he said all it takes is an accusation? All he did was put a bullseye on every player/coaches back.

Goodell made it clear when he arrived he was going to clean up the NFL. It's working too... DUI's are the same I think but arrest and criminal activity is down dramatically since his first year.

you do make some valid points that i do agree with to an extent, but why are so many players getting arrested and not getting suspensions? i think its very fair and accurate to say that goodell was influenced and or pressured by the media to punish ben as much as he could. it's not the black media though, its the media in general. i dont think ben being white has as much to do with it as much as him being an elite qb who has won 2 sb's.

i forgot to add that yes i am now upset that so many players get arrested and do not get suspended because of ben's suspension. the only reason why that is the case is because most steeler players do not get arressted or are in trouble. there are some players in the past but no way is it the norm for steelers to get in trouble with the law. ben is also the best steeler to ever get suspended i would be willing to bet. when bam morris or players who are just average to good get busted who really cares that much?

                              It is? How? Explain yourself.

                              What's different? Nothing.

If anything players who get arrested are getting away with MORE.
