Morelli OnLion: Weighing in on Big Ben

With the spring sports season winding down at Penn State, I thought this would be a good time for me to weigh in on a topic that I’ve been eager to for some time.

It doesn’t have a Penn State tie, but it’s a hot topic that has taken over the Internet, newspapers and sports television over the past several months.

The topic — Pittsburgh Steeler QB Ben Roethlisberger.

For you Penn State fanatics, we’ll feature another member of the Class of 2010.

    Let’s start with Big Ben.

    Weighing in on Big Ben

Over the past couple of months, Pittsburgh Steeler and two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been in the media spotlight for all the wrong reasons. A night out drinking in a small college town in Georgia changed the star quarterback’s life forever.

Before I begin, I must say that I am a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

That being said, I think that the media scrutiny in this case has been unbelievable. I also think that the punishment handed down by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was unfair.

First, let’s look at the media scrutiny. Sports Illustrated — one of the most respected sports journalism magazines in the world — recently ran a cover story about Big Ben. The story, which featured a grainy photo of Roethlisberger on the front cover, was entitled “The Hangover.” The SI story had a lot of facts, but it also had a lot of he said/she said, speculation and unnamed sources. Personally, I found the piece offensive and ashamed of what the industry has become. SI is better than that.

Look, there is no question that Big Ben has been guilty of bad judgment. He is one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks and he needs to learn some life lessons from all of this. When he came to the Steelers out of Miami of Ohio, he was a wide-eyed QB who led his squad to a 15-1 record and an appearance in the AFC title game.

Did Big Ben deserve to be suspended? The Steelers will be without their star QB for six games.

That was followed by a championship in Super Bowl XL. A motorcycle accident followed, but he bounced back with another championship, leading the Steelers to a come-from-behind 27-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII in one of the best title games ever played.

But all of that has been forgotten in the aftermath of a couple of sex-related incidents. It’s important to note that Roethlisberger has never been charged with a crime. He is guilty of bad judgment and nothing more.

Which brings us to the fans. If you are one of those fans eager to trade or cut Big Ben, shame on you. You’re not a true Steeler fan and should have to turn in your Terrible Towel. Cut Ben? Trade Ben? Really? Perhaps you need a refresher about what life was like before Ben. Remember David Woodley? Bubby Brister? Mark Malone? Kent Graham? Mike Tomczak? Tommy Maddox? Kordell Stewart?

More than the QBs, remember what the Steelers were like before Big Ben. There were plenty of .500 and sub-.500 seasons. When the Steelers did advance to the playoffs, there were plenty of first-round exits. Who can forget the AFC Championship Game losses? All of that changed with Roethlisberger. The Steelers would be stuck at four titles if not for Big Ben.

Fans are fickle. Whe the Steelers begin the year 2-4, 1-5 or 0-6, fans will clamor to get Big Ben back in the lineup. When he throws that first touchdown pass and posts that first win, all will be forgotten.

Which leads us to the six-game suspension. Can someone please explain to me how someone who has never been charged or convicted of a crime is forced to miss the first six games of the season. Those six games will likely cost the Steelers a chance at the playoffs and keep them from earning a seventh Super Bowl title.

Keep in mind that Michael Vick, a convicted felon, only got a two-game suspension when he got out of jail. Roethlisberger will get three times that and has not been charged, let alone convicted of a crime.

If you’re one of those fans who have had it with the Steelers, the Rooneys and Big Ben, let me know if you’re ditching your season tickets. I’ll gladly take them off your hands.

It might not be fair, but IMO, it might be the best thing that ever happened to Ben- sort of a 2x4 up the side of the head to get his attention - "hey buddy, time to change rides". Not sure it will work, but I'm pretty sure if nothing had been done, he'd find himself charged/convicted the next time or the next.

BTW - is this guy not very accurate, or what? He says "... never been charged...". Wasn't he charged for the Vegas thing (in civil court)?

A civil suit does not constitute being "charged." A law enforcement/governmental body I believe are the only entities that can charge you with anything.

The civil suit is filed by individuals.

I do hope that the "tough love" Ben is getting turns out to be a wake up call that gets his life outside of football back on track and on the straight and narrow.

I also believe the 6 game suspension was done in full cooperation with the rooneys. no way roger goodell hands down 6 unless dan rooney is on board and will support it. I think the league and the family worked on this punishment together - both to inspire ben to change and keep goodell looking tough.

I think one of the things not touched upon is the NFL having an investigative division made up of ex FBI and Secrete Service guys who can dig up all sorts of information. *Warning* - the following is pure speculation: When Goodell says "he's seeing a pattern" it's because his guys know about dirt (possibly a lot) on Ben, more than these 2 episodes, and other situations and rumors regarding his becoming this 'Big Ben' persona and not being a quality person. I think that information was turned over to the Rooney's and as Starlifter mentioned, they were in agreement with the suspension.

Ben is young and can easily turn this around. The Rooney's will help with this and want to help him. This isn't just about reputation, it's dangerously close to keeping a guy from doing time (I'm sure many won't agree with that though). That GA DA was dying to prosecute.

Re: Morelli OnLion: Weighing in on Big Ben

Another story about how unfair it was... spare me the pity party. We go 3-1 amd when Ben returns we keep winning. The writer needs to stop acting like Ben and the Steeler fans are victims. We have a very talented QB who is prone to doucheness when drunk.

I don't buy the whole "remember Malone and Brister" line either. Steeler fans don't think like that when it's another team who has a player in trouble. We talk about how other teams are scum so they keep their "criminals" but when it's our player we get really "realistic and business like"

I'm not saying Ben is a criminal... but we tend to call other players who are in similar situations all types of names.

All sorts of information gets back to the owners when one is as big a star as Ben. They probably gave him advice after the Las Vegas incident and he appeared to ignore their advice. It could be the reason the owners were so upset with Ben.

I agree that Ben has quality people in his corner and can turn it around. Only time will tell if Ben wants to turn things around.

I never wanted to see Ben get tossed from the team over this. Besides Ben being a 9 volt battery, I think six games was too much. I thought two or three games should have been the punishment. Just comparing his infraction to other players in the past.

cruzer - I'm really not a tin foil hat wearer (besides everyone knows tin foil isn't strong enough to keep "them" from reading your thoughts, but I digress...). I do believe the suspension was ridiculously long for a guy who's never been arrested or even charged.

But what do you think? Did the Rooney's have any involment with coming up with the punishment? You really think it was 6 games based on these 2 incidents (the first of which has more holes than swiss cheese and a bat sh!t crazy accuser)? I'm trying to come up with why 6 (or even 4 with good behavior) and the only thing that makes sense is this is based on more than these 2 recent situations.

IMO, and what I choose to believe...

The Rooneys are upset about their star QB making headlines for these reasons.

When this incident came up they contacted the league and said that they are fully on board for suspending him, and together they worked on the punishment. As a precedent I refer back to 2008. Santonio is arrested for having pot in his car, but is not yet convicted of anything. The team suspended him for one game in the middle of the season - the upcoming NYG game which we lost because JH is a poor long snapper....but I digress. He never received a league suspension.

Don't forget that this punishment is the first of its kind. 6 games which will be reduced to 4 upon successful completion of league imposed counselling? That does not sound like something that the commish just pulled out of his a$$, this sounds like it was a collaborative effort.

Who knows what the result would have been had Rog handled it himself, but this was a "team" effort.

The conspiracy theory image was directed at this part: When Goodell says "he's seeing a pattern" it's because his guys know about dirt (possibly a lot) on Ben, more than these 2 episodes, and other situations and rumors regarding his becoming this 'Big Ben' persona and not being a quality person.

I should have narrowed it down to that. I do agree that the Rooney's were involved but I don't agree that it was for anything beyond the 2 incidents. There are players all over the league who act like jerks at restaurants and whatnot. And for all we know, the rumors about Ben being that way are just that: rumors.
