    Camp report7/31/25

Early players on the field 10, 33. 66.
No Cam today and no TJ.

OL had CooK and Anderson on the left side for most of the reps.

No pads today and no hitting.

O does walk through no D on the field.

8 qb hits Smith on an out cut. 12 personnel which is what we saw most of the day.
8qb Smith lined up as single back and takes a 8 hole toss. Didn't expect this but Smith did show a burst .
8qb again to Smith this time on a 6 hole hand off.
8qb hits Smith in the slot.

    Some goal line plays.
8qb hits Gainwell on an out. Good hands catch by Gainwell.
8qb hits Millerfor a TD who was in the slot.

Punt returns were Austin n Miller one and two then everyone else. They both looked fine.

    Just some quick observations:
Benton looks like he gained some muscle. This should help with his ability to anchor.
Washinton in TE blocking drills looked impressive. It was only a simple drill one on one but he stood out.
Will Howard without pressure just in drills showed good accuracy. Ball doesn't explode out of his hand like AR but it gets there.

    11 on 11 drill:
8 hits Metcalf on a deep slant for a long gain.
8 incomplete to Wilson as Slay knocks it away.
2qb finds Austin late on an out for a TD
2qb tries slant to Wilson inc as 22 breaks it up.
18 qb tosses quick td to 11 on an out.
18 qb inc on an out pass to high intended for 87 who was open.

    2 on 2 pass wr/db drill:
Heyward showing good hands and ability to get open.
J Smith showing excellent change of direction. He looks more wr than te.

Some 1 on 1: (drill favors the O)
Wilson beats Porter on a double move for long TD
Washington showing good receiver skills for one so large. He repeatedly won inside on short passes.
J Smith and Thornhill get into a fist fight. Tempers are hot. A few punches but nothing to serious.
Coaches lined them up again and bad blood spilled over and almost punches again. Welcome to camp.

So painting with a broad brush and without pads things are football like but not exactly football . Here are some items that stood out to me.

Rogers missed 2 easy completions today. He was not perfect. He did display a very quick release and was on target more then not. Passes still have enough zip.
MR was okay in drills. Didn't do anything special but was okay.
Howard got better as the practice went on. He does not have a big arm but the ball gets there okay. Made some good reads today. Hit players between the numbers repeatedly. He climbed the pocket well today and avoided the rush while keeping his eyes downfield.
Metcalf shirts were seen at Latrobe. He did not disappoint. Burst and good route running and hands catcher. He is a very solid #1.
J Smith stole the show today. Ran some arrow routes and broke wide open more than once. He has excellent change of direction. Caught everything and really put on the show today. Crowd appreciated his efforts.
Rookie Kent showed some serious quick twitch. He worked in the slot and took away some under routes today. Not great but has some potential.
Washington is a load to cover. Inside the #'s he may be able to deliver some production for us. He has to help in the passing game as a receiver. if he's only used to block it makes us predicable. Lots of upside here.
Miller body catches a bit to often. Got to use the hands and though Miller caught it well today he needs to use his hands more.
Trice was productive in coverage today. Length helps him as he broke up a few back shoulder tosses today.
Robert Woods showed vet hands and solid route running. Not special but he should be able to help.
Logan Lee uses his hands well and keeps OL off his chest. He showed a nice rip pass rush move and got into the backfield a few times.
76 showed out okay today. He took extra sprints after practice. Moves well for a big man.

The Friday show with full contact should tell us a lot more than today.

Had to paint with the broad brush today because of the lack of pads. Matt Spaeth was at camp today. Didn't talk to him at camp however went to Chick fil A on 30 for lunch and he set next to us. Very friendly dude. Very lean now. Very lean. Had his family with him so didn't talk much but he was very friendly. Sorry no inside info from Matt.
    Try it again Friday.

      Looking forward to Friday's report.
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***
