This is our most important camp for the offense in years
We added two new key players ( Rodgers , DK ) and have many young players on the OL starting. And RB and WR have new players with limited or no game experience too ( Wilson, and Johnson )
QB:
Rogders will start , but who will back him up and start if/when he goes down? I really like what Howard did in his last four college playoff games! And Ben has apparently taken him under his wing. Not that I wish injury to any player BUT We know we have a good back up and below average starter in Rudoplh. But Howard is the question. He is very experienced and NFL ready. The Arm, size, leadership, and mobility( a semi mobile QB who can run and buy second chase in the pocket ) are there. He appears to be bright.
The snap count with number #1 unit offense in camp should be 60 % Rodgers, 30% Howard and 10% Ruldolph. Basically I want Howard to start if Rodgers is out, not Rudoplh. But is he ready for that?
RB: Working in Johnson for 8-12 plays a game where he touches the ball should be tha main goal. Johnson should get 30% on the snaps in camp. Warren is a good player but I have reservations about him being a workhorse type back. He should get 30% of the snaps in camp. I want to see what DJ Jones can offer at FB. I know he can catch, but how good of a locker is he? Dude, it is built like a house with big hands, and thickness in the body
WR: A good coach is a need here! Wilson is ready to rock. The Steelers should start him at one spot, and work on him in sub packages. I am high on Wilson and hope he will deliver. We know what Austin III can do and a mediocre Woods can do if Wilson does not seize the opportunity as the starter. Obviously DM Metcalf is the star and we should build around what he does well, which is a lot. The 5th or 6th WR should go to a kick off return man. Miller should make the team as a package chin mover type.
TE: We are deep here. 'Muth is a solid player. A decent receiver but needs to work on his blocking. Smith is a deluxe receiver, but short on speed. Washington is a house of a man, and IMO the best blocker of the bunch...if he can only stay focused! The Steelers have the makings of a very good two man set, with the pass or the run. I see it. Heyward is your jack of a trades player, but I don't see a roster spot for him.
OL: A good coach is needed here. At LT it's Jones. He is in shape, dropped 20 pounds and un-injured. I am hoping the switch is natural to him. I would give him up to 2 preseason games before the Steelers come up with a plan B. RT goes to Fautanu and he is essentially a rookie . Patience is needed with him. Farizer is a rock at center, and one of the league's best. I am high on McCormick at RG,. He came from a small school and should be much better with his assignment this year. He has excellent tools. Seumalo is a solid veteran. The depth is good at the interior but at Tackle the hope is Warren or Cook can play. These two are #4 tackles on most teams, but one of them will be #3 on the Steelers.
Coaching: We have some good pieces, and some new players. Smith better give Rodgers a lot of leeway to make his own calls, and the postinal coaches have a lot of teaching ahead of them. Obviously, Tomlin will have a lot of input, but his track record on offense stinks over the past six years. I hope the Defense and Special teams keep him busy. I used the word hope a lot. As my coach used to say when I played way back when, Hope is not a strategy. Yet that is what we've got in many spots of the offense.
