I guess all the worrying can end now. Was it ever really in doubt?

If you do the math...not significantly different in terms of the percentage of the cap.

You know good for him. What a great country but I don't think he's worth it. Hopefully he can prove me wrong.

I'm looking for a strip sack in the last two minutes of the divisional round. I'm looking at 18 sacks during the regular season. I'm looking for a Burrow sack to close out a game.

Unsurprising that (1) it got done and (2) it's an over payment.

I was hoping (against hope it seems) that Omar would be able to get it under $40MM.

Maybe it would have destroyed the relationship, but I think we really should have pushed the double franchise tag option to keep the price lower. Especially since it's only 3 years (I assume a 3 year extension, so the next 4 seasons).

I'm not sure yet if I think that it being 3 years is good or bad for us. 3 years means that maybe his play isn't declining hard by the time this deal is over and we're tempted to pay him a huge number again (particularly given how he's really pushed for being the top played non QB on both his last contracts). But it does mean that if he does decline in the next couple of years he might still be able to play it out without too much pain.

Let's hope that (1) Cam can teach him how to beat father time and (2) we see the same crazy cap inflation we've been having...although with a 3 year contract this will matter less.

Overall, expected but disappointing. Don't like it.

Here's to hoping he has some Kevin Greene in him and can play into his mid-late 30s!

              Old contract=15.3% of the cap.

New contract=14.4% of the cap. Three year deal, not four. Will be 34 when it expires.

Good data. That puts it into perspective.
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***

Sorry Ovi but my worrying is just beginning. When you pay this much for a non QB who was "O for his last 6 games" its a concern.

Watt has to show up and show out when it matters most with this type of money.

Hate to burst bubbles but now we are the Browns.. we are the Jets. Signing old players for name recognition and paying non QB's insane money while having nothing to show for it.

Let's hope this is the year we finally get to the second round of the playoffs.

See the post about cap % being funny money. It's the cash spend that is real. Remember, a team has to put the guaranteed portion in an escrow account. This means Rooney has no access or interest bearing on $108M dollars for 3 years. I don't know about you, but that would be a tough swallow for me.

EDIT: I was wrong, 2028 will be his age 34 season, but still, he fell off late last year and wasn’t hurt, so it’s still a risk.

the whole amount? Wouldn’t they pay some of that guaranteed money this year which would reduce the total?

I’m not a cap guy so I’m asking for clarification on this.

I think this escrow issue will be something the owners try to make easier in the next CBA.

My understanding is that it all guaranteed money goes into escrow. But once it's paid, it comes out.

I think that's why the NFL (and the Steelers in particular) has so little guaranteed money relative to other pro sports leagues.

I think you're correct that it's not as bad when the guaranteed money is the SB and year 1 which all gets paid in the short term.

But a contract like Watson's where it's $230MM fully guaranteed over 5 years has got to be really tough.
