    Rooney Wearing Headset During Games?

Somehow can't picture it at all. It might actually be a good idea though.

In fact, Ima predict the NFL will give audiences a chance to tune into headsets in the future.... for a fee of course.

Carlie Irsay-Gordon explains her habit of wearing a headset during games
Story by Mike Florio • 9h • 2 min read
In the days since Carlie Irsay-Gordon has become the principal owner of the Colts, many have pointed out that she has a habit of wearing a headset during games.

Maybe more owners should do it.

Via Stephen Holder of ESPN.com, she explained the reasoning for the practice during a Tuesday press conference.

"I need to be able to say, 'Is this person full of BS? Do they even know what they're talking about?'" Irsay-Gordon said. "It is such a complex organism, a football team and how it operates. . . . You could say, 'Oh, that person ran that route wrong.' Then you learn, 'Oh, someone tagged the wrong WR and it wasn't really the player's fault, it was the person that called it.

"I would suggest it for anyone else that has to pay coaches and GMs millions and millions of dollars. It helps you make a less expensive mistake, potentially."

Some will chafe at the idea of an owner being that involved. But look at it this way. If they're going to be involved in making big decisions —and they will be — they need to be putting in the work.

Ask yourself this question. Which makes more sense, hobnobbing in the luxury suite during games or standing on the sideline and directly monitoring the game?

We've also seen several photos of Irsay-Gordon with a call sheet during games. Again, it's good. it shows a commitment to making the effort to understand how the complicated football sausage is made by putting her hands in the bowl and picking through the ingredients.

As long as that mic never comes down I don't see any issues with owners doing this.

I don’t know, I wouldn’t mind the occasional “it’s 4th and 1 at midfield in the playoffs and we’re down 10, WTF are you doing punting?”

You'd think someone like Jerry Jones would do this. It's called micromanaging your employee.

It's a bad idea. You hire the coach to coach because you don't know how to. Maybe this is why the Colts are bad .

what good could come from it?
          rooney doesn’t know football
How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?

That's why you hire a coach and a general manager. You gauge their effectiveness by their results. You let them do their job and not eavesdrop on them. How many owners know football?

Listening in isn't micromanaging. Now, if she's calling plays or commenting on the playcalling during games then yes, I agree that's micromanaging. But if she hears confusion or constant comments about a certain player, then that's important information that might not always get back to the owner. Imagine listening in while Canada was calling the offense...

                I get what you mean.

But I think this owner is right that it should be about evaluation. Too slippery a slope if you let owners interfere in calling games IMO.

If I owned a team I would prolly do this from time to time.. wouldn’t announce it or be so obvious with those big ass headphones tho.

I think Canada would’ve been fired sooner if this happened.. or maybe Tomlin would be on the hot seat for overriding plays and not letting the coordinators do their job?

Did not most of us think Canada needed to be fired at the end of the previous season. Did we need headphones to listen in to reach that conclusion? No his performance result was obvious.

Those of you who think it's a good idea how do you manage those under you? Do you constantly check their logic or their decision making? Or do you prefer to work for someone who constantly checks and questions what you are doing?

Typically people who need to check on everything those under them do are usually incompetent and figure if I'm dumb everybody is dumb.

Why does everyone like to compare their job to professional sports?

The NFL hires number crunchers, private eyes, analytics and hold a combine where they measure every part of a players body.. and they test for illegal drugs and performance enhancement supplements.

Acting like owners should sit back and not question coaches when they fail is not a sign of incompetence.

I've had both hands-off and micromanaging bosses. When I managed a small group of professionals, I like to think I was more hands-off. But no one is saying owners should tell coaches how to do their job. Simply listening in is no different than watching. Yes, the line is crossed if the owner starts to command things during a game. But there is no evidence that that is what she is doing.

I think it would be a good idea for owners. They can see in real time how good or bad their coaches are.

If the NFL would issue a broadcast of the calls for the fans ( scrubbed of the private / secretive information ) after the game, say 65 or so plays calls with the result of the action ( 15 - 20 minutes ) I would certainly buy that service.
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***

Doubt it happens. Even with the relatively harmless Hardknocks the teams have final edit rights. They don't want to be made to look bad in the eyes of their fans.
