I think this was an excellent draft. We got two immoveable objects. We need to #1 stop the run. We got a Steeler RB, 6'+ and 220+. Sawyer is a football player and I can't believe he was there in the 4th. He was the heart of the Buckeye defense.

We got a #1 WR with our 2nd round pick. On paper this was a great draft. None of the available QBS were franchise guys. Howard is a big guy who poured it on in the playoffs but he stunk at the combine. I know some of you guys liked Sanders but he doesn't have the arm strength for the AFC North. Watch what he does in Cleveland. Howard is our type, big and arm strength but I don't think he's it but Rodgers is coming in the building

In a draft I say you match value in a round with need.
apparently they show up sometimes and not others..
How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?

I think it made sense and seemed to be a reasonable combination of BPA and need.

Hopefully it pans out on the field.

Clearly the Steelers did not draft BPA at a need at pick 21.

Tomlin said they felt extreme urgency to get DL... do you think there was a better option than Derrick Harmon on the board at that point?

I think North was being facetious weren't you brother. I'm impressed with myself that I used facetious in a sentence and in an appropriate fashion.

Mrs Brown how's that for a D minus English student?

You got it! If the Steelers had drafted BPA at a position of need, the 'experts' say it should have been Sanders since he was a top 10 QB.

Even if Fautanu pans out, the entire pick of the litter of CBs were available. I know you can't cry over spilt milk, but dang.

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.

They absolutely draft for need. It's typically, "here's needs. Who's the best player from that bunch".

Because otherwise, I'd imagine they'd perpetually have had 6 second round RB, right?

Draft for need but also draft for strategy. Take last year's draft as an example. The Steelers needed both a tackle and center (plus a lot of other positions but let's just stick to these two for now). The bigger need was center as there were already two starting tackles but nobody who could be considered a starting center - Cole was awful and let go, Herbig was coming off a season ending injury and was never a starting center, and Daniels had C experience but was already the starting G.

Round 1 drafted Fautanu, who was a nice but not top prospect, but others like Mims and Latham were already gone. I'd say only other potential tackle was Guyton, but unlikely either makes it to round 2. Meanwhile, centers Barton, JPJ, and Frazier all on the board.

The cry from Steeler fans was for the top C, Barton. However, that could have meant a much lower tackle prospect in the second (next tackles were Patrick Paul, Blake Fisher, Roger Rosengarten - Fautanu's teammate, and Kingley Suamataia. The calculated risk was to leave probably the best prospect of the bunch on the board - Barton, and hope to select a slight downgrade in the second - Frazier. That way they drafted Fautanu instead of addressing tackle later with a prospect who was likely much further down their board. Obviously it hasn't worked out so far due to Fautanu's injury, but I believe that was the team's strategy and it included leaving better players at a position of need on the board in the first.

The way Henry gashed us, it was definitly a postion of need. That's why we double dipped at the position as well.
