This Draft Was A Crime Against the Franchise

1983... go down the list for the Steelers....could it have been any worse?

3 WR, none of whom got a 2nd contract. Skansi and Garrity had fairly long careers elsewhere, though. Re-did WR in 1984 with Lipps and Weegie. They really went hard after Swann and Stallworth’s replacements for a couple years.

6th round pick Eric Williams played 4 years with the team, nobody else in the draft lasted that long, half were gone after a year.

One guy could have made that a great draft.

1985 wasn’t much better. I forgot that in 1986 they drafted Brent Jones, but cut him. Ended up being a really good player for the 49ers.

1987 was a pretty damn good haul, though.

Checkout the complete draft history of Pittsburgh Steelers starting from 1936 to present including year by year draft picks on Pro-Football-Reference.com

BTW, totally remembering just reading about these drafts in the newspaper back in the day.

Never said he didn’t, stay away from open flames or that straw will go right up.

BTW, his 1984 and 1989 road playoff wins vs. Denver and Houston are more impressive than any in MT’s career to this day.

EVERY HC has made some mistakes
Noll was a great HC, Tomlin is not up to that level

Noll was a great coach for that time.

I don't think it's reasonable to compare him to Cowher or Tomlin because the role and power of a coach were just so much different pre-UFA/cap.

But even Noll needed a roster full of elite players to win. Lemming will tell us that he never won a SB when even one of our HOFers from that era were not available.

Good to great coaching is important. But without good players, it doesn't matter. IMO Noll might be the best example of this in NFL history since he was able to stay at the helm for so long.
