Acho: Tomlin can’t figure out QB development

This goes far beyond the post-Ben years. I don’t think he knows how to leverage good QB play when he gets it. Apologies for using this flawed stat, but it’s all I have to work with.

Ben’s two best passer rating seasons under Cowher resulted in 15-1 and AFCC loss and a Super Bowl win. Ben’s worst full season QB rating was in 2006, a lost season from the bike crash, appendectomy, and concussions.

Here are Ben’s best passer rating seasons under Tomlin, the first three represent Ben’s three best passer ratings ever. 2010 sure looks like the outlier.

2007: Lost first playoff game at home
2014: Lost first playoff game at home
    2009: Missed playoffs
    2010: Lost Super Bowl
    2012: Missed playoffs
    2018: Missed playoffs

The 2008 Super Bowl win was Ben’s 2nd worst full season QB rating. Did that cement in Tomlin’s head that you don’t need franchise QB play to win a Super Bowl? His Tampa ring came with Brad Johnson. Both trophies were won with suffocating defense.

So is Tomlin’s really lacking a franchise QB now or does he not value them or know how to best leverage them? Remember, he texted players on draft night 2022, telling them “We got our guy”.

Would any other HC in the league think Kenny Pickett was their franchise QB if they truly valued having a franchise QB?

Tomlin is not a good evaluator of talent. That's why I hope Kahn and Weidl rule on draft day and let Tomlin pout in the corner. In truth, it's tough to say how much Colbert vs Tomlin were part of the disasters of the late 2K teens, but if the Steelers don't hit slam dunks in the next couple of drafts we are in for a long era blah football.

It's hard to disentangle who is responsible for what. But the drafting has not been good for a long time.

And Tomlin is a big part of that process. So he should wear a big part of the blame. Maybe there's some argument over whether it's 40% of 50% or 60%, but it kind of doesn't matter re: the claim in your first sentence.

I don’t see any way that Kahn has more say than Tomlin in drafting and free agency, that’s why they brought in Weidl, a football guy. Omar may be the face of the GM position, but I’m guessing Tomlin and Weidl are in charge of personnel, Kahn is the guy to make it work financially.

Moreover, it was reported last year that Weidl only sets the board, lets others draft according to it, so I’m guessing Tomlin makes all the picks with Rooney having veto power.
