As I was watching the Bills-Broncos game today I decided to look up this Joe Brady guy and he kind of fits the mold of a potential Steelers HC. He’s only 34 years old and oddly enough he also played WR at William & Mary just like Tomlin. I figure if we’re pushing for Tomlin to be fired then we’re gonna have to come up with some names to replace him with and Joe Brady is certainly a name worthy of consideration.

No way Rooney fires him and pays him ~ $50MM to sit on his couch at home.Comment

I heard Brady is an awful coach. Was actually a story that one of the guys was telling on TV, that Allen was asked about him and he was joking around, calling him a bad coach because he doesn't want him hired elsewhere.Comment

I don’t think the Steelers have a ‘mold’ for head coach, other than a younger guy that hasn’t been a head coach already.
I’m sure the talking heads like to talk about only 3 HCs in X years, but I don’t believe that’s very important. I don’t think that contributes much success in the grand scheme of things. I actually think there’s a much better chance of complacency by the HC and the players. I truly think that’s what has been happening for lots of years. How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?Comment

I know a lot of folks on this board don't want to hear or accept it, but I think you're dead on about complacency on the part of our HC. Pretty much as soon as we knew we were in the playoffs, he seemed to go into "coast" mode. It's like what really matters to him is the +.500 streak and maybe getting into the postseason; once that's been accomplished, it's basically good enough. Would he like to go to another Super Bowl? Probably, but I don't think it's so important to him that he's willing to go to the extra work and take on the additional steps necessary to get the team on a serious run. I think this is something that you risk when you give a HC the kind of job security that Rooney has given Tomlin.I don’t think the Steelers have a ‘mold’ for head coach, other than a younger guy that hasn’t been a head coach already.

Maybe the more interesting types of OCs would be guys who had good looking offenses without top 5 QBs?
I think that was the thing I was excited about re: Smith.Comment

I wonder if Wes Phillips from Minnesota will start getting some traction. He’s another McVay guy. Obviously has some awesome pieces to work with but you have to be impressed with what he has done with Darnold.
And Ben Johnson has to be on that list. Goff is good but I don’t think anyone was putting him in the Allen, Burrow, Mahomes, Jackson tier.Last edited by hackjam; 01-13-2025, 10:50 AM.👍 1Comment

An OC isn’t going to leave a good situation to come to the Steelers. We have to get whoever is right under Joe Brady or Ben Johnson or whoever is the OC in Detroit. Those guys are looking for HC gigs and Ben Johnson has turned down HC offers to stay in Detroit so he wants the perfect gig or to win a SB in Detroit before he leaves.

OCs in good situations are looking to become HCs. Not OCs behind a HC that's probably going to be here for at least 2 more years.Comment

I agree. Hiring a coach because he was Mahomes' OC and they won a SB is nice, but does nothing to prove he can address the needs of this team. It's what I've always hated about the way HCs get hired in the NFL. That being said, I don't think the OC has the autonomy to call his own shots in Pittsburgh, so it doesn't really matter if a guy succeeded with Josh Allen or Ryan Tannehill.Comment

It would be so interesting to know how much power the OC has. I'd imagine it's more than the DC.

For Smith, I think he had a lot of control. But I also think he was hired because he is all about this kind of offense. I was hoping that he'd be able to get more out of our QBs like he did with Tannehil (sp). But I think not having skill players really hurt. And I was honestly surprised that the OL wasn't better this year...really worried about Jones.Comment

I would think that Tomlin's fingerprints are on the first 15, as well as the general philosophy and playbook. Beyond that, I'm guessing Smith knows his limitations and if he goes off book, he'll have to answer for it.
