Apparently he's always had this problem, which was exacerbated by the Steelers' poor kick coverage in preseason.

When we picked him up, Alex K said that his hang time numbers weren't great. But that he did kick far. And that he was pretty accurate (I think good number of balls inside the 20?).

Agree that not having good gunners doesn't help the situation.

Here's Johnston's numbers last season... he's not the problem. Danny Smith no longer has the convenient excuse of a lousy punter. He needs to do his job and put together a punt coverage unit. Something he has struggled with since being in PIT.

I think this is partly true.

But as NC points out, he's performed very well in the past.

The problem is that we went from having 2 good gunners to 0 good gunners (or at least 0 proven gunners).

Hopefully we can pick someone up.
