bh's Best of What's Still Around (For What We Need)

Let's take a look at who is still hangin' out there in the Steelers positions of need that we are likely to draft.

I'm going to rate the Top 5, as I see them, that could help the Steelers with what they have to offer. The ratings are top to bottom, with the best on top.

    OFFENSE

Realistically, we are probably only looking at adding a situational RB and possibly a RT. There are plenty of guys who fit the mold the Steelers may be looking for.

    RB

    Anthony Dixon- Mississippi State
    Rashawn Jackson- Virginia
    Charles Scott- Louisiana State
    John Conner- Kentucky
    James Starks- Buffalo

It sux if you really need a RB in this draft because the pickings are really slim. But any of these guys bring enough to the table to be good situational players in the Steelers backfield behind Mendy and could reliably be counted on to contribute 5 to 15 touches a game with authority. A few here may project to be much more if they pick up the pro game quickly enough.

    RT

    Ciron Black- Louisiana State
    Kyle Calloway- Iowa
    Sam Young- Notre Dame
    Selvish Capers- West Virginia
    Chris Scott- Tennessee

All of these guys project to the right in the NFL and a few (Black and Scott) have experience on the left. Since what were really looking at is someone to push Colon, any of these guys should challenge for PT at the RT position.

    DEFENSE

With 7 picks on Day 3, it's a safe bet the Steelers will be going long on some D. Position-by-position, here's what we're looking at.

    DT

    Art Jones- Syracuse
    Doug Worthington- Ohio State
    Vince Oghobaase- Duke
    Cam Thomas- North Carolina
    Jeff Owens- Georgia

The bad news is that each of these guys need some work to be a complete player. The good news, though, is that Big Snack just put ink to a new deal. If he can hold on for at least the next two years, one of these guys might develop to be able to adequately fill his position once he leaves.

    DE

    Corey Wootton- Northwestern
    Brandon Deaderick- Alabama
    C.J. Wilson- East Carolina
    E.J. Wilson- North Carolina
    Hall Davis- Louisiana-Lafayette

While the Steelers don't really need much more than depth in the short term at DE, a couple of these guys will eventually develop to be starters. This is a position where the talent that remains on Day 3 will be fairly strong in the 4th Round and remain interesting for the balance of the draft.

    ILB

    Jamar Chaney- Mississippi State
    Phillip Dillard- Nebraska
    Darryl Sharpton- Miami (Fla)
    Travis Goethel- Arizona State
    Joe Pawelek- Baylor

This is a good year to need a player for ILB and there is still quite a bit of actual quality left that could develop into starting caliber players. Will go out on a limb and say that if either Chaney or Dillard are still on the board when the Steelers select in the 4th, it might be very difficult to take a pass on either one. Perhaps we'll get lucky.

    FS

    Kam Chancellor- Virginia Tech
    Kendrick Lewis- Mississippi
    Barry Church- Toledo
    Darrell Stuckey- Kansas
    Kurt Coleman- Ohio State

There's some solid talent available here. The Steelers will need a complement to Troy in the coming years and while not all of these guys are true FSs, each has a good chance to develop into a solid NFL player and a versatile contributor across the DB and on ST.

    CB

    Akwasi Owusu-Ansah- Indiana (PA)
    Walter Thurmond- Oregon
    Donovan Warren- Michigan
    Brian Jackson- Oklahoma
    Trevard Lindley- Kentucky

This has been one of the most in demand positions for the Steelers this year and we, luckily enough, still have good players out there to choose from. This is a case where the Steelers demand is getting along well with the draft supply, since there are still guys on the board who have real potential to be future starters and stars.

    OVERVIEW

We have one pick to address each of these areas on Day 3. So, if Colbert and the Brain Fart Trust have their act together, we could be looking at a fairly complete and effective draft if they select from the guys on this board.

Re: bh's Best of What's Still Around (For What We Need)

I think there are still several quality RB's left (you listed only 3 possibilities for RB and 2 FB's). There is Jonathan Dwyer, Joe McKnight, Anthony Dixon, LaGarrette Blount, Charles Scott, James Starks, Joique Bell, Deji Karim, etc.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

RB Anthony Dixon has a DUI on his resume', i highly doubt we will be selecting him.

Well, he was in my mock draft.

We'll see. This list has a little more advantage over a full mock in that much of the draft has already happened and we have a clearer view of who's left.

The reason I kept him off my list was because there were some concerns with him on a personal level that, judging from our off-season to date led me to the question "do we really need a player coming in with the drama in tow?"

I think he'll be a good NFL player. But the questionable personal background was enough for me to keep him off the list.

Point taken. Fair or not, it can keep a perfectly good fit from your team if your off-season has been a soap opera already.

Obviously, I like a lot of those guys, RB. I'm not sold on our need exclusively for a RB. If we can get production from a FB that can let him be more than a blocking back, then we should go there. OTOH, will the Arians allergy to the FB running the ball be enough to quash the discussion on taking a FB? The one name on that list that's a real dark horse is Starks. I'm thinking we could possibly get him with our final pick, but that he'll return some excellent value for us at the end of the draft.
