Remember when the Redskins signed Bruce Smith and Deion Sanders to big contracts 4 years after they were any good?
So much for Shanahan trying to unearth a late-round gem at RB like he seemed to do routinely in Denver...Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.
Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.
We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

The Washington Redskins are about to add another running back to their already crowded backfield.
Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Redskins reached an agreement with free agent running back Willie Parker. According to Schefter, it's a one-year contract with a maximum value of $3.1 million.
The Redskins already had Clinton Portis, and in March they added Larry Johnson. Now they have three running backs who have been among the best in the league in the past, but who appear to have lost a step.
Although Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has suggested that he expects Portis to keep the starting job, Schefter reports that Parker has been told there will be an open competition for the starting job.LETS GO MOUNTAINEERS!

Shanahan is extremely good at evaluating RB talent, and getting the most out of that talent... We'll see if there is anything to get out of him in this situation.
It will be interesting for me to see how the OC utilizes him... I've said it many times that I think he still has some "gas in the tank", but is just not being used correctly.Comment

One Redskins back should get squeezed out

Bruce Allen is trying to re-create his version of his father's "Over the Hill Gang" in the Redskins backfield.
The news that Washington signed Willie Parker leaves only one conclusion: Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson, or Parker should get cut before Week One.
PFT's Mike Florio confirms that Parker can earn "up to" $3.1 million, but we haven't tracked down the guaranteed money. We suspect most of that is tied up in incentives. Johnson has only a $800,000 base salary.
We don't have all the details yet, but we suspect the Redskins will be able to drop Parker or Johnson painlessly. Cutting Portis seems less likely because $6.43 million of his salary is guaranteed. (We also think he has more left in the tank if motivated. He should be now.)
Both Johnson and Parker struggle on third downs and don't play special teams. It would be crazy to keep them both.

that redskins team was probably one of the worst in terms of how much money snyder spent. they also paid chris dishman a lot of money 4 years after he was any good. the redskins are like the mets. they spend a ton of money and they are never any good.Originally posted by RuthlessBurgherComment

Parker's still young/low mileage back. And he's a workhorse.

okay, Willie Parker is gone.
That leaves Rashard Mendenhall leading a backfield that includes a worthy Mewelde Moore backed up by the likes of Carey Davis, Stefan Logan, Isaac Redman, Justin Vincent, and Frank Summers. Only Moore has more than three years NFL experience. Mendenhall enters his third season this year and that leaves Logan (who is much more a special teamer and not a member of the backfield) entering just his second season, Redman with just one year on the roster, and Summers beginning his sophomore season. The same goes for Vincent but neither has had much playing time in a real game. That could be a problem. Will the Steelers rely on what they have or add some depth in free agency or the draft? They probably could have taken a shot at LaDainian Tomlinson or Larry Johnson but they did not make a bid for their services. There aren’t a lot of veteran backs available at this point so it appears the draft will be the only course of action if Mike Tomlin wants more competition in his backfield.
Much hope had been given to rookie Frank “The Tank” Summers last year but he suffered an early injury prior to the season opener and did not play the rest of the way. Now the word is that he is healthy and has been attending daily workouts with the rest of the team that has been at the sessions and I hear he looks good. That could be HUGE for the Steelers running game. After all, Summers weighs in at 240 pounds on a 5’10” frame. The man is a bull and could be the next Jerome Bettis in the way of being a load carrying the rock. He certainly is not of equal talent of the Bus but he could be a weapon in wearing down defenses late in games. Let’s hope he turns out to be the real deal. Keep in mind Summers can also be a very good receiver out of the backfield.
