Missing the action
Sean Mahan and Justin Hartwig are competing for the starting center position in this training camp, but the guy who created the opening by retiring wishes he still was able
to play.
Jeff Hartings visited Saint Vincent College and said if his body could handle it, he would be out on the field. “If I could, I would, but both of those guys would beat me out.”
Hartings enjoyed watching practice with his two sons, but the competitive juices still flow for him.
“It brings back a lot of memories,” said Hartings. “I definitely wish I could be out on the field. People ask me that question a lot: Do I miss it? I definitely miss football. I think most guys who retire from football do it because their bodies can’t do it anymore.
If I could, I definitely would be playing. My body isn’t allowing me.”
When players retire they often say the one thing they don’t miss is training camp. Not Hartings.
“I loved everything about playing in Pittsburgh, including where training camp was,” said Hartings, who retired after the 2006 season. “I always felt like we stayed here too long and we had too many two-a-days, but I enjoyed being up here. You get to know your teammates better during training camp than any other time."
