Foote to sign 3 year deal with Steelers...

    ...maybe.

Steelers | Foote set to rejoin team
    Sun, 14 Mar 2010 16:52:27 -0700

Terry Foster, of The Detroit News, reports free-agent LB Larry Foote (Lions) is set to rejoin the Pittsburgh Steelers. Foote flew to Pittsburgh in hopes of finalizing a three-year contract.

I feel so sorry for Foote, being forced to play on a team that isn't competitive and a winner, you know, like the Cardinals are.

We got our "6-PACK" - time to work on a CASE!

HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!

yeah, to have to possibly settle for a team that has only won six Lombardi trophies must be a tough pill to swallow...

He just wants to start so I'll give him a pass on the comments. Glad he's back to provide some quality depth on the inside.

          Interesting-

So, if he signs, do you bump Farrior-

          Move Timmons to the Buck

and start Foote in the Mack??

          not likely, but

          Is the combo of

          Foote / Timmons > Timmons / Farrior

          ??

I guess we'll find out in camp if JF really has lost a step, or if last season was an aberration.

Can't wait for the we need Larry Foote in the line up ahead of Timmons posts to start in 5..4..3..2...

They could potentially do a true rotation on the inside with, say, Farrior at the Buck and Foote at the Mack on first down, then Timmons at the Buck and Fox at the Mack on second down, then keep Timmons on the field for 3rd downs. It would keep everyone fresh...you'd just have to worry about teams going no huddle on you, and keeping a certain pair out there for longer than you'd want them to be.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I like bringing back Foote. He was never great when he was here, but he knew the system, knew his responsibilities, and allowed the playmakers to make plays.

I think Timmons was more effective when Foote played on first and second and Timmons played in passing downs. I think that rotating Foote in during obvious running downs will help the defense. A fresh Timmons against worn down defenders is far more effective than a Timmons who has to take abuse in the run game.

When Foote was first mentioned, I questioned the signing for one reason -- special teams. Will Foote play special teams at this stage in his career? I have a hard time imagining that he will cover kicks. I still hope that the Steelers grab a young, developmental ILB, but I'm not sure if I can remember the team carrying 5 ILBs.

Re: Foote to sign 3 year deal with Steelers...

We don't need to wait until camp to see if Farrior lost a step. Just watch the games from last year from mid season on. This is a confusing move if it does happen in relation to the draft. If Foote does sign, it actually gives the Steelers imediate depth at both ILB & OLB so I like the move. Knowing that ILB was more than likely an early pick on their wish list, I speculate why they want to make this move. Perhaps Farrior actually expresed interest in retiring and the Steelers told him they will reduce his role and put him in a rotation if he could give them 1 more year. I think the size of Foote's deal might shed some light. Perhaps Farrior has come to the end of his career and the Steelers didn't want to show their hand in the draft.

What is more of a mystery is the FA activity of the Steelers. If you add the players signed, consider the positions, and the amount of pending draft picks...It is obvious the Steelers will be active on draft day trading up. However, is it in the 1st? I really don't see them "wanting" to move up after McClain because he could fall to them. Perhaps Haden if he has a good Pro-day. I'm getting the feeling that the Steelers are targeting a C. But I'm not 100% sure which one. Remember, Trent Williams plays C too, he is a very versatile OL and very athletic....The next Dawson???? They pick Willaims...Covers every OL position. This might be a player they would have to move up for. Or is it Pouncey? Maybe the Steelers still pick Spoon or McClain at #18 and trade back into the end of the 1st or top of the 2nd for Pouncey to ensure they get him. It would cost them a min of their 2nd, 3rd, & 5th but they get an ILB & C which has to be high on their list. Even if they gave up 3 picks this year to move up, that would still leave them with 6 more picks in rounds 4-7. Seeing how the roster has been filled up with UFA, you would begin to imagine that is where this is headed.

So you are advocating taking the player off the field who last season was the 5th leading tackler, 3rd leading sacker and 2nd in forced fumbles and basically playing him 50% of the time or less. BTW, he missed 3 games.

Sorry but that is nuts, insane, cuckoo, etc. If anything you take Farrior off the field 50% of the time not an up and coming Timmons.

You can probably justify carrying 5 ILB's since Timmons is also your primary backup at both of the OLB spots. If anything were to happen to Harrison or Woodley, Timmons would move outside, and we would still have 4 ILB's to rotate inside.

Not to mention the fact that Fox is one of those "special" players that is a ST ace who can back up a position. So counting Fox as an ILB is just a bonus. Using this list of Woodley, Farrior, Timmons, Harrison, Foote, & Fox...Even if they draft SPoon & no OLB, for example, you have 5 guys capable of playing ILB and actually 6 guys capable of playing OLB. Foote has worked outside in practice with the Steelers, Fox played outside & inside with the Chiefs as well as practicing outside with the Steelers, same can be said with Timmons. Granted the pass rush specialist of the group would be Woodley, Harrison, & Timmons but if you get to your 4th OLB starting...You are just looking for someone would could play every down on assignment. I think if anything...The Foote signing makes this group deep if they draft another LB.

Foote helped the Steelers win their last Lombardis and made many of us happy fans.

But he left in a funk when it looked liike Timmons was going to pass him n the depth chart and has most recently talked about the wonderfulness of the Cards. I don'tknow if Detroit let him go or he left on his own, but why take on someone who considers your team his third option and may cop an attitude if he doesn't start?

I'd much rather have us to get younger up the middle. Yes, Foote knows the system, but I'd rather see a rotation of Farrior/Timmons/Fox/rookie over Farrior/Timmons/Fox/Foote.

Foote is the past, Timmons and a rookie LB is the future. Quit trying to hold onto player who have passed their "sell by date"

I believe Detroit released Foote. If true, enough said. They likely found out his success is the result of the scheme he played in Pittsburgh and the players around him not his abilities.

Fox is also 28, so having him and Larry on the team doesn't necessarily mean we don't take say McLain or 'Spoon. We still need a youngin' or two to start working into those LB Spots.
