    Super Bowl LVIII Thread

Interesting contrast of team building styles. One team carried by a franchise QB, the other an insane roster and offensive system trying to carry a game manager. In a way, Steeler fans should root for SF to validate the approach the Steelers are currently taking, though I don't think we can match SF's talent or offensive sophistication.

Since the Steelers last won a playoff game, the Niners have been to four conference championships and two Super Bowls WITHOUT a franchise QB. That is next level team building and coaching. 11 years ago they did it with Colin Kaepernick.

I suppose the reason to root for KC is that a Niner win ties them with the Steelers at 6 trophies and they'll be in a better position for the foreseeable future to reach the 7th. A Chiefs win gives their franchise 4 with a 28-year old Mahomes, but they're going to lose Kelce and others this offseason, so they're still a ways back in the rear view mirror.

All in all, I'm a bit surprised SF is favored. Their defense is legit and Mahomes is playing like Michael Jordan right now. Maybe with Thuney out the Niners DL can dominate, if not, I see KC winning by two scores.

I made a thread on this is the non Steeler football forum here. Check that out.
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***

If you look at the stat lines of the QBs, you would think SF has the much better QB.

Mahomes has to be one of the most obnoxious QBs in NFL history. Something about him just grates on my last nerve.

Purdy by contrast comes off as one of the nicer guys in the NFL. Gotta root for SF and hope we get to play them next year in the race for 7.

Which is why context matters. Why is nobody crying that Purdy didn't win MVP? Stats, REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

I can't stand Mahommes either, but I have to admit not much really seems to rattle him. Niners have to get pressure on him, sort of how Tampa did in their SB win over the Chiefs. If Shanahan allows him to sit back in the pocket the game is probably over.

As far as QB stats go, I'll say it again but in today's NFL QB stats can be misleading or not paint the entire picture. Modern offenses allow a lot more QBs to be productive in ways that in the past wasn't really possible unless you had specific system/coaching and elite talent. The NFL wants it like this and so here we are, look at how many QBs throw for over 4k now for example.

Most are picking the Chiefs to win and for good reason, they are playing with confidence, they have the experience, they've won it before. In the Ravens game it never really felt like the Ravens were winning that game, it reminded me of the Pats SB teams where it never felt like they were in danger of losing in most of their postseason games.

As far as the Niners winning a 6th SB, the Pats are already tied with the Steelers so I don't even care at this point, if anything it might be a good thing if it actually wakes up Rooney and the organization.

I like Mahomes and love watching his game. He has skills like no QB I've ever watched. He doesn't grate on me like Marcia Brady did. Thankfully, because we're probably going to see as much of him as we did Brady.

He's two OT losses to Brady and Burrow, the former of which should have ended on a Brady INT that was called back because Dee Ford lined up offside, from appearing in 6 straight Super Bowls.

Josh Allen can't break through and yet the Steelers are doubling and tripling down with Kenny Pickett. Unless something drastic happens in the draft or FA, Rooney and Tomlin can say whatever they want to the media, but they're not serious about competing for a Super Bowl.

Finding the next QB who is BETTER than Josh Allen is nearly impossible. You just have to hope to build an overall team that's good enough to beat Mahomes.

The Chiefs are not unbeatable. They lost 6 games this year and VERY easily could have lost to the Rats. Probably should have.

Nobody is unbeatable, but they're also a couple dropped passes away from being the #1 seed and Mahomes is locked in like Michael Jordan.

You don't beat a team like that with Najee Harris and Kenny Pickett as your offense. You need a franchise QB to have a puncher's chance.

The "build a team around an average QB" system has an unspoken inherent flaw -- it's too hard to keep the entire roster injury free, you lose a couple guys and you're done.

I didn't see it like that, Ravens never led in that game and were down 17-7 at halftime (at home). I do agree that Chiefs are beatable but I never thought Chiefs were losing that game with how it unfolded.

I think Chiefs success and to an extent the Pats SB success has a lot to do with how mediocre the rest of the NFL has largely been over that time period. It's weird because the Chiefs have had a ton of success recently but it doesn't really feel like anyone looks at that team like it's legitimately great or a dynasty (even though if they win today technically they will be).

Lamar doesn't throw a pick in the EZ and Flowers doesn't come unglued (and fumble) and it's likely the Rats win IMO.

I agree we need a franchise QB to legitimately compete for another ring. I just feel like we wasted nearly 2 years with Canada, NOT seeing if Kenny can be that guy. I think Kenny has something in him that we haven't fostered. And I think Purdy would have been just as awful in the Canada/Tomlin system the past 2 seasons.

if Flowers scores and they run the damn ball they probably win.

and not to make excuses but it was clear pass interference on that endzone INT.

                            I agree with this.

but more importantly, what food is everyone eating today?

besides snacks I'm having ribs, chicken wings, potato and macaroni salad.
