Frisman Jackson will not return as Steelers receivers coach

Frisman Jackson will not return as Steelers receivers coach

    February 5, 2024

With a new offensive coordinator in Arthur Smith, the Steelers are making some additional changes to their coaching staff.

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Frisman Jackson will not return as the team's receivers coach.

Jackson had been with Pittsburgh for the last two seasons.

Dulac also notes that the futures of quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan and running backs coach Eddie Faulkner are currently unclear. Sullivan and Faulkner were co-offensive coordinators after the Steelers fired Matt Canada during the season.

    Hines Ward?

On Monday afternoon, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the Steelers are parting ways with WR coach Frisman Jackson. Jackson had spent the last two seasons with the Steelers but with a number of effort-related issues coming from that position group in the 2023 season, it makes sense to move on an get […]

He hasn't exactly moved up the coaching ranks since he interned with the Steelers several years ago. At least Antwaan Randle El got an OC interview with the Bucs a couple of weeks ago.

Hines is the first name that popped into my mind though and I hope he is a viable candidate, just based on the toughness and experience he brings to the table.

At Latrobe in JuJu's rookie year Hines spent a boatload of time one on one with JJSS during and after practice. I still have some photos I took of those two still working long after practice was over. Hines as a coach from what I can say first hand is that he's a worker. IIRC I do remember putting that in a 'Camp Report" that summer.
I hope they bring him in.

Ward may throw up in his mouth a little bit if he watches tape on Pickens blocking early in the season.

Source: Steelers Interviewing Three Offensive Coaching Candidates
The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to meet with three more offensive assistants as they look to add to their staff.
                NOAH STRACKBEINFEB 3, 2024 11:02 AM EST

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers aren't done interviewing for their offensive staff. After the hire of Arthur Smith as offensive coordinator, the team is set to meet with three more candidates for assistant roles.

The Steelers are set to meet with Los Angeles Chargers passing game specialist Tom Arth, Tennessee Titans quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator Charles London and New York Jets wide receivers coach Zach Azzani, according to league sources.

They are also expected to interview candidates for their open strength and conditioning coaching roles.

Arth entered the NFL ranks in 2022 with the Chargers. Prior to Los Angeles, he was the head coach at Akron (2019-2021), Chattanooga (2017-201 and John Carroll (2013-2016).

London worked with Smith in Atlanta as the Falcons quarterbacks coach in 2021 and 2022. He was with the Chicago Bears as an offensive quality control coach from 2007 to 2009 before becoming the Tennessee Titans offensive assistant (2011), Penn State running backs coach (2012-2013), Houston Texans running backs coach (2014-2017) and Bears running backs coach (2018-2020).

He spent the 2023 season as the Titans quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.

Azzani is the only candidate without NFL passing game coordinator experience, but he has plenty at the college level. He's worked in the pros as a wide receivers coach for the Bears (2017), Denver Broncos (2018-2022) and Jets in 2023.

He was a passing game coordinator in the NCAA with Florida in 2010 and Tennessee from 2015 to 2016. He was also the offensive coordinator at Western Kentucky in 2011 and the assistant head coach at Central Michigan from 2007 to 2009.

At his year-end press conference, head coach Mike Tomlin said that he expected changes to be made to the team's coaching staff. It's unknown if any other addition would remove a coach in the current role or if a hire would take on a separate offensive assistant role.

Of course not, he's a former Steeler so he MUST be the best candidate. That's how it works. Need Bettis coaching RBs, Big Snack coaching DL, Farrior coaching ILBs, and Woodson coaching DBs.

                      lol
every year we hear someone beating the drum to bring in ex-Steelers as coaches
not opposed to it if they can coach
but just because someone was a great player doesn't mean he'll be a great coach

in all seriousness, though, I have heard good things about Antwaan Randle-El, who's been working with the OC in Detroit

While I'm not one to get the warm fuzzies with the return of a local hero, the thing I would love about this hire is the attitude that Hines brought every day. Play hard every play and love what you're doing. We already know that Pickens has the physical tools, you infuse some of that HW dog (fellow Bulldog) in him, and that can be the next step that he needs. Not to mention the hard ass attitude that he would bring to DJ.

Just hire Ward. He has the technical knowledge and he has the presence. Would be a great mentor for Pickens

In the NFL, Azzanni has worked with the Jets, Chicago Bears (201 and Denver Broncos (2018-2022). He was also a passing game coordinator in the NCAA with Florida in 2010 and Tennessee from 2015 to 2016. He was also the offensive coordinator at Western Kentucky in 2011 and the assistant head coach at Central Michigan from 2007 to 2009.
During his time in the NFL, he's helped with the development of Garrett Wilson, Courtland Sutton, Jerry Juedy and others. He'll now have an opportunity to help the progression of Diontae Johnson, George Pickens and Calvin Austin.
The Steelers have brought in other assistants for interviews, leading to believe they will continue making changes to their coaching staff. They have openings in their strength and conditioning department but are also interviewing passing game coordinators and quarterback coaches.
