Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.
Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.
*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***Comment

Moreover, keeping Mason just sets you up for a QB controversy.
If you're committed to Pickett, go with him. If he fails, you draft a new one sooner.
I personally have no interest in 2-3 years of KP vs MR discussions. Either Pickett is the man, or you go get one in the '25 draft.
I think most people are completely missing THIS point.Comment

I wonder how much both the new rumors: "Mason wants to go to a new team" and "Steelers interested in bringing Tannehill" are just about the contract negotiation with Mason.
Both sides saying "look, we're willing to explore other options".
I still think it's better than a coin flip that Mason comes back. I think we'll give a contract with a high number for actually attainable salary. And I think our current QB situation means that he's got a better chance to get on the field here than most places. Especially since we're unlikely to draft a high pedigree QB this season.Comment

As much as some of us feel that the Steeler brain trust are pretty error free...they did treat MR pretty much like garbage. Told him he was a starter, drafted KP, hired Mitch and then didn't even get a shot to earn the #1 spot in pre-season. People seem to forget he was on the circuit after Ben retired (Rich Eisen show, etc., etc.).
Yeah they guaranteed him money but I look at that as like most of us who are in the working world...they were willing to pay him and he did his service for that (At Will) contract. They didn't do him a favor they both negotiated a deal in good faith.
Honestly, do you think he should trust them that there will be a "fair" competition after two years of being #3 when it was clear he was at least better than Mitch.
I think if I were in his shoes, I too would look for clean start where I would at least have more faith that when they promised a fair competition...there would be an actual chance.
Secondly, I kind of parrot the opinion Andrew Filliponi has (a rarity)...
if they are sincere about KP, you really can't bring MR back. It would be extremely difficult to have an "open" competition and focus on making KP the franchise QB. (There words not mine).
Also, if they sign a Fields,Tannehill, Wilson - it's a signal they aren't really focussed on making KP a #1...
It will be telling what they do offseason.

I think there are several things at play here...

But I tend to think that we'll offer him more because we know there's a good chance he'd end up our starter by the end of the year.
Which is also why I think he'd want to stay.
Re: previously treated.
I could see this going either way...depending on how things were communicated to him.
I'm sure he was aware that QB was a strong possibility in UFA. And I don't think it was a surprise that we brought in a UFA either.
Was he told that he'd get a legit shot in camp? I don't know. If so, I could see him being pissed about how he was treated.
But he also got to test what other teams though of him last year. And if it weren't for the Steelers, it sounds like he'd be selling commercial real estate or whatever. So he might also be grateful for the opportunity.
Maybe most importantly, we didn't put Kenny in when he was healthy. Instead, we kept going back to Rudolph. Because he showed that he was the better player. I'd imagine that means a lot too.
And since he's already been "screwed" once by a team drafting another QB (and bringing one in), I wonder if he'd be more gun shy about going to another team. Unlike last time, I think it's pretty unlikely that we use a 1st round pick on a QB this year. So he'd have at least one year to show what he has (if he thinks he can win the job...which he already won once).
I won't begrudge him if he chooses to leave (just like I didn't begrudge Bell). But I think staying would mean he gets close to his top offer and maybe his best chance to play.Comment

lmao at fresh start. The man just tried the market last year and came back to the place that “screwed him over”
He played well in 2 games. Played a total of four. That’s 4 more games than he would’ve player anywhere else last year.
Maybe we are clearing all this cap room to get him $20 mill per seasonSteelers 27
