You know who would work in an Arthur Smith offense?

    Justin.

    Skyler.

    Fields.

Run heavy, cuts the field in half and uses play-action, making for easy reads, deep throws over a stacked box.

Bring him in for competition and draft a guy on day 2. THAT would be much more exciting/inspiring than Rudolph/Tannehill and a 7th round flier.

Not sure how Fields is gonna turn it around under Tomlin/Smith, come on! From what I've read Smith didn't do any of that in Atlanta and Tomlin does not know offense obviously. It would likely turn out to be a big dud.

I would be shocked if Fields isn’t retained in Chicago. Starting over with another QB who seems to only thrive when plays are off script seems like a bad idea. Which means, Chicago will probably start over again and move on from Fields.

            In a vacuum? Sure.
Do you want that over the RESOURCES we could build around say an extended Rudolf and either have to pay him or lose him in a year?

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

Fields was not an accurate thrower of the football. Near the bottom of the league in on-target %. That is not a QB to have in an offense that needs the occasional 3rd down throw for a 1st down.

I thought you said you were souring on this idea?

He's been pretty bad at winning games.

He would require some kind of acquisition cost. Could we get him for one of our 4th round picks?

I wouldn't want to use better draft picks than that because the team would be forced to either have him on (1) a cheap, one year prove it deal or (2) give him a 5th year option essentially at the time of the trade, which sinks a lot of guaranteed money into a guy that is being given up on by the team that drafted him (because he hasn't been good at winning games).

Basically, I don't think adding Fields is much better than running Kenny and Mason (or similar) back. But it costs way more in terms of both draft picks and guaranteed money.

Plus, I don't think the team is ready to give up on Kenny yet. If that's the case, they can't really bring in Fields and give him the option. Because that's the end of Kenny in Pittsburgh.

I'd be more interested in this option if Kenny a year down the road in his contract and still looked like this (i.e. next year I think it's more likely we drag someone in off the scrap pile).

If Mason is what he showed in the last few games, I think he can play this kind of role for us. Probably better than Kenny who seems to have trouble with accuracy (high and or behind) on short and intermediate crossing routes IMO.

Rudolph isn't mobile enough for this scheme. Smith has always had QBs who can roll. Sell your #2 jerseys, Steelers fans, Mason is not returning.

That was before we had Smith, whose scheme is a perfect fit.

I still say Pickett is the only QB currently on the roster that we see fall 2024.

I expect Tannehill and a rookie. And folks around here will lose their minds.

Mason came in and got a struggling team to the playoffs. He would be a fool to pass on a chance at a huge paycheck.

I was wondering if Mason may follow his buddy to Atlanta. Closer to home for him as well.

I’m not sure anyone is going to throw a huge check at Mason for beating Cincy and Seattle and Ravens backups.

Its a great story for Steeler fans but how
many teams do you really think are like “wow, did you see what Mason did? We should sign him to a nice contract”

Its like the Temptations movie “aint no one coming to see you Otis!”

Ain’t no one going to give Mason real money this offseason for throwing 5TDs in 4 games.
