Someone please explain this to me

The Steelers have 16 men on the practice squad. We even have a fullback, which they don't use and two Nose Tackles.

Now for the question. How come we don't have a quarterback to develop? The play at the most critical position is really hurting now.

    https://www.ourlads.com/nfldepthcharts/depthchart/PIT

    PRACTICE SQUAD

PS 53 Johnson, Kyron OLB 85 Watts, Duece WR 45 Colletto, Jack FB 41 Ollison, Qadree RB 35 Barcoo, Luq CB
PS 91 Marshall, Jonathan NT 82 Fitzpatrick, Dez WR 62 McCollum, Ryan OC 96 Fehoko, Breiden NT 15 Mims, Denzel WR
PS 16 Jack, Myles ILB 72 Diesch, Kellen OT 25 ROWE, ERIC S 49 Carpenter, Tariq ILB 33 Elliott, Jalen S
    PS 5 Black, Henry S
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***

Having 2 backups with game experience may be one reason why we don't have a 4th qb on the PS.
However to answer your question "why don't we have a young qb to develop ? The answer is we do he is Pickett. And to your point of QB being the most critical position you are correct and I would prefer they had a 21 or 22 year old on the PS. That would seem likely to happen a year from now when MT or MR are gone.
Winds of change are here. Khan making trades and moves we didn't make in the recent past. Letting go an OC in season also something we didn't do previously.
Got to give this some time to play out.

We have 16 spot for the PS. Why not developed a QB on the practice quad? He probably will not amount to anything in the NFL, but I say take the chance.

      What do you think?

I'll have an IC light by the way.

100%. No longer 'business as usual' for this team. Loyalty from both sides has disappeared (this is true even in the corporate world). Every man for himself is SOP.

PS QBs typically run the scout team and with both MT and MR available I don't know that a third QB would add much to the picture. Add to this that there are so many vet QBs with experience on the market at the end of every season it doesn't seem to be worth trying to develop an unknown type into even a backup role.

And who is the scout player for mobile QB to prep the defense? Add a 4th QB to the prentice squad! Give some else a chance to blossom as it cost peanuts and no draft picks. A low risk big reward type of investment.

We drafted a QB late in 2022 but we released him because we had a crowded QB room. Should’ve kept him instead of Mason. He is on KC’s practice squad.

based on the way we play Lamar I think we are good on how we play mobile QB’s.

we probably use a RB or someone who played QB in HS to mimic a mobile QB.

Lamar is only mobile QB we face? Come on Feltdizz you are better than that.

The Steelers should mine for gold at QB on the 16 man practice squad. Yet we don't.

I’m not sure what your point is..

we aren’t going to carbon copy every mobile QB in the NFL. If we have someone who can mimic a mobile QB why would we need to triple down on it?

How many mobile QB’s have torched us lately?

Look what we did to Lamar and Watson this year.

Who else will we face this year where we need a mobile QB in practice?

It is a good call out. I know they have 3 QBs with starts in the NFL, but with such a large practice squad it kinda seems weird not to have a qb on it

Dumb question; when is the last time a PS QB rose to the ranks of starting QB in the NFL?
                      This isn't the 1970s.

I liked what I saw from Chris Olukunda in preseason for KC.

really didn’t understand drafting a QB in the 7th in 2022…

doesn’t this mean we drafted him before Purdy? lol

No team is going to stash a promising QB on their practice squad, where he can be snatched up. This is a nothingburger on the concern menu.

well, I think we were going to try and stash Chris O on the PS but KC scooped him up.

Not that he is promising but look around the league at some of these backups. Truly awful.

I wished we kept Chris instead of Mason. We are never going to give Mason another shot so what is the point? Can’t be because he knows this awful offense.

No, a good prosming qb gets a roster spot.

But there are plenty of young QB's with a lot to prove. As such I am for adding one on the practice squad. Espically when you have a non top 16 QB starting. Heck we don't have a top 25 Qb in the NFL.

I take it you are not a fan of this idea?

Don't you be yelling at me for this idea now. I am not the guy making the decisions. Cool shades is.
