Okay, I'll do it since the guy does take a ton of heat (often rightfully so) for his punting. Harvin had a statistically very good game against Cleveland, and I will also point out why I hate just looking at stats.
7 punts - 45.7avg.
40 yard net
4 of 7 inside the 20
2 touchbacks
First punt from own 40 - 55 yards downed by Steelers excellent punt, excellent result
Second punt from Cle 40 - only 31 yards but all net, downed at the 9. Good punt (not great) because you were able to pin the O inside the 10 but not as deep as you'd like. Punting from the 40 is not as easy as it sounds, which is why teams often take a delay of game penalty when they are that deep.
Third punt from Cle 41 - again deep in Cle territory and a horrible result, only 21 yards net. However, Harvin did give the ST enough time to get down there and bounced it on the 1. Would have taken a great ST play but not as bad as it looks.
Fourth punt from Cle 48 - another touchback but bounced it at the 5 with two STers right there. Not as difficult as the last punt, play really could have been made. Net of 28 not reflective of the punt.
Fifth punt from Cle 41 - beautiful punt, landed it inside the 5 and rolled out coffin corner, did it all himself.
Sixth punt at Pit 33 - should have easily been caught at the 28, but for some reason returner misjudged and Steelers received a gift of about 22 yards. 61 yard punt to the 6 that never should have been. Really not a good punt (39 yard fair catch should have been) but great result.
Last punt Pit 31 - fair caught at 25 with defender standing beside the returner for 44 yards all net.
Fourth and sixth punts are why you have to watch and not use stats to judge performance. One good punt with bad result, one bad punt with great result. As a matter of fact I'd say that was the only bad punt of the night by Harvin.
Two other things stand out here. 1) Not one punt was returned and 2) Harvin was punting from deep field position all night. 4 of 7 inside Cle territory. Punting on a short field and still pretty good distance overall.
Note, this is not an argument that Harvin is a good punter. This is an argument that he had a good game. We'll need to see a lot more good games to actually call him a good punter, but will give him this one to start.
