I assume that’s what they’ll do once the season begins.
either way they’ll be screwed this year.
Interesting how all this will play out. Long way to go.

I actually wouldn’t be surprised to see someone give him an offer sheet after the draft. Not fully guaranteed but close to the one the ravens offered. Then the compensation will be 2024/2025 1st round picks.
If they withdraw the tag, I think he becomes a UFA.

But if he doesn't play under the tag, I think they still have his rights for the next year and can tag him for the same amount (i.e. it's not a 2nd tag).

So there's lots of pressure for the player to sign in wk 10.

But it would probably be really hard for the team to carry the cap hit of a QB tag without actually having the player play on the team (although they'd get that room back the next year).

Will be an interesting game of chicken if there's no good trade offers (and I think that whoever said upthread that it's kind of late for a big trade with Lamar for this season is correct).

Pretty sure Lamar can sit for a year and not assault women and get an offer in 2024.
Worth noting that Watson didn't look that good after sitting for a year and half. If Lamar sits and Watson continues to look bad next season, it will probably hurt Lamar's market.

But his market should still be kind of insane either way IMO.

He already has an offer better than the GOAT ever had. He's a fool to not accept what the Ravens already offered. I'm sure he could even push that up a little. But he's playing the Le'Veon Bell game.

But for a QB, who knows. I think the contract will be absolutely insane if he actually gets to UFA in his prime.
Yup... if he plays a year under the tag, that means it takes a year longer for him to get to the prize. May as well sit out, stay healthy and get right to the longer term deal that he wants

He could also wait a year while playing under the tag and see what Burrow, Herbert, and Hurts sign for in the near future. If he wants that big payday, it also might do him some good to play a full season, and at a higher level than what we have seen in 2021 and 2022. He's banking on his 2019 MVP season still being relevant in 2023. As I have said before, not many owners will back up a brinks truck to his door based on his current form. I know all he needs is 1 fish to hook, but good luck with that. It hasn't worked so far.

I think this is exactly what Lamar's strategy and thought process is.

if he can be an UFA when those contracts get signed, he will be in great position for his own mega-deal.

What Actually Happened: Lamar Jackson became the youngest two-time NFL MVP winner ever.

I agree, but it would look funny if Burrow signs a team-friendly deal for less guaranteed than what LJ thinks he himself deserves. That could end up backfiring on poor Lamar.

I think NJ brought up a good point.

My guess is that "not playing under the tag" really means "sitting out for as long as possible while still getting the accrued season" so coming back in week 10.

But who knows. Maybe doing the nuclear option on your relationship with the team forces their hand (worked for Brown).

Only if he plays like 2019, not fall short and not play down the stretch again, then he's f----ked.

That’s definitely not how I determine a qbs worth or abilities.
I’m guessing nobody does or the draft would be filled with just players from the top 4 college teams.
How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?

I think that Lamar doesnt have the big deal yet because he doesnt have an agent. But I dont think it has anything to do with his worth or his ability to negotiate. Think about what it would do to the sports agent business and the relationships teams have with those agents if Lamar Jackson gets a huge deal without an agent.
