Weidl loves Herbig and he's totally comfortable with him being the starter. I know the Steelers are unhappy with Kevin Dotson but Dotson grades far better than Herbig. I hope they're not relying on this guy to replace Dotson. I think we're going to be disappointed in Herbig, I really do.

Dotson has been inconsistent. Looks great on one play. Then loses it on the next. At least there now is someone to push him for a spot.

I also think you may see James Daniels go to the Left and Herbig play the right side
Certainly would make sense. Daniels played LG for his first three years in Chicago.

I agree that Dotson blows and he needs to be replaced. I just don't think Herbig is the player to do it. Hope I'm wrong.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

This mean Dotson is moved to the bench and Kendrick Green is likely cut. It also means you can cross out O'Cyrus Torrence form the draft list as he only plays guard. This is an upgrade to the last important potion on the stating offense. ( excluding FB )
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

Obviously, after this signing, I don't see any OG taken in the firs three rounds.

PFF is objective and not 100% concrete, but ESPN analytics are in a league of their own.

This is his 3rd team in 3 years for a reason. Good lineman are kept, not made to roam free agency every year.

The running game is all about position and angles, and so are these metrics. First, each block is identified -- that's the easy part. Next, our system determines whether the defender was able to defeat the block. It does this by using a large set of rules based on relative distance to the runner, relative velocity to the runner and many other more complicated measures. A defender doesn't have to make the tackle to win his block. He can penetrate the backfield to cause a disruption, contain the runner behind the line of scrimmage, or squarely fill his assigned gap to earn a win. If a blocker allows his defender to win, he is debited with a loss. There are several other wrinkles. One of them is that an unblocked defender can get a win if he makes the tackle inside 3 yards. Another is that if a blocker fails to land a block, which happens when a blocker can't get to a linebacker quick enough, he gets what we call a "whiff" loss.

Yes, the great ESPN team can do all that LOL.

I think that is what the plan is. Daniels' best position is on the left side, but Dotson couldn't play on the right side. Maybe a 1+1=3 scenario on the OL

LT isn't an "important position?" OK, now I've heard it all.

I'm betting the Ravens will go after Torrence since they lost Ben Powers to the Broncos. I hate that because I think Torrence is going to be a Pro Bowl player

                                PFF is subjective with it's 'context' related grading. It leads to weirdness like this;
Pro Football Focus graded McGovern at a 69.6 overall, which ranked second for Jets O-linemen behind Vera-Tucker. He was pretty consistent all-around, with a 69.7 run blocking grade and a 69.5 pass blocking grade. In pass protection, he was charged with five sacks and 24 quarterback pressures, but his 97.9% pass-blocking efficiency rate ranked first on the team.
Ironically, Herbig ranked second in pass-blocking efficiency rate (97.7%) with one sack allowed and 18 quarterback pressures in fewer offensive snaps. His PFF grades were worse, however, with a 58.0 (overall), 55.7 (run blocking) and 58.6 (pass protection).Ironically, Herbig ranked second in pass-blocking efficiency rate (97.7%) with one sack allowed and 18 quarterback pressures in fewer offensive snaps. Also read that Herbig was battling a few injuries but played through them last season which might explain his dip compared to 2021.

I don't know what kind of player Herbig will end up being for the Steelers. If he is Dotson2.0 but with more consistency then it's a win for the OL.
