Do we really need to spend a high draft pick on receiver?

I did a deeper dive on weidl.

Eagles drafted a tcu receiver (reagor) right before the Justin Jefferson pick.

also passed on tee Higgins and Michael Pittman.

although this current tcu receiver looks a lot more like wr’s that were passed on
    Then A sub 6’0 speedster

Johnston is a beast, the question with him will be his ability to stay healthy.

After that, I think it's a fairly mixed bad. We tend to get OK to good WRs, but we pick one in the 2nd round most years (although DJ was a 3rd).

I also think it was easier to pick WRs when we had Ben. Particularly in his prime.
Totally true - Cincy and Dallas draft #1 WRs, the Steelers are generally getting 2's and 3's in the mid rounds.

Hopefully Pickens is the next big hit, but he has a lot of refinement work to do.

The biggest weakness on the team is EXPLOSIVE PLAYS.

I am all for drafting a WR in the 1st, yeah I am on they Addison hype train, but the OSU WR will do also.

Even if Addison/rookie WR does not make the explosive plays, I believe his presence will open up DJ, Pickens, Mouth and others to make the explosive plays.

If we sign Sutton, Edmunds, and Kazee our DBs should be still good enough, maybe the strong point of the D. (I think Edmunds starts playing more of a hybrid ILB-S role like Barron did)

If we bring in a splash FA in Termaine Edmunds and resign Spillane (or equal talent) we are better at ILB than last year. ( quality over quanity - if we play base 3 Safety, and have Terrel Edmunds hybrid ILB/S will not need much depth there)

If we bring in 1 OL in FA ( hopefully a RT) our line will be better. ( I would love to draft a G/C, at 49, to push-start over Dotson or Cole)

As for DL, I think we are just ok, if we resign Wormely and rotate him with Leal, Loudermilk. (I would love for us to draft DL at #32)

All though those moves listed set us for BAP ( WR) in draft , and I do believe all are possible with the cap cuts and restructured contracts.

IMO Austin will prove to be a tough cover and has the speed to break one and get favorable match ups. Think about it before you mock draft a receiver early.
I agree and am very much looking forward to what Austin brings to the offense next year. It's essentially like drafting a receiver this year without having to burn a pick. The team also has far too many needs elsewhere - particularly in the trenches. A hard "No" on drafting a receiver early.

I’m seeing the #32 pick as a spot of maybe grabbing another wideout.
catch someone falling like maybe Addison or the LSU guy.

then you also have guYs like flowers and DOWNS slated to go right around there.

i would prefer a bigger guy but sone of these smaller types look electric on their highlight videos

Austin has speed and shakes but man the dude is tiny. I question his durability for the NFL.

Colbert’s final attempt at his endless search for a Darren sproles type of player. Same as Dri archer/ Anthony McFarland and those other little guys he’s drafted over the years and missed on. That part of Colbert’s drafting I’m glad to say I won’t miss.

Steelers sign WR Dan Chisena, the former Penn State track star with 4.3 speed who has been a key special teamer for the Minnesota Vikings.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed WR/special teamer Dan Chisena to a Reserve/Futures deal. The team made the announcement moments ago. We have signed WR Dan Chisena to a Reserve/Future contract. @BordasLaw https://t.co/tV1VOF4Mao — Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) January 23, 2023 Chisena was previously with the Minnesota Vikings but did not sign a Futures deal after their […]

That's good if it means we can replace a higher paid special teams type guy IMO.

Insurance if Boykin leaves. Special teamer.
