10 Years of Tomlin Drafts - Rounds 4-7

Over the last 10 years, these picks have mostly been throw away picks.

    The only worth mentioning:

    Antonio Brown - 6th round - 2010
    Martavis Bryant - 4th round - 2014
    Willie Gay - 5th round - 2007

So we got 1 great player. 1 with all the potential in the world if he's not suspended again. And a 3rd serviceable starter. Maybe Vince Williams will make a 4th serviceable starter. Maybe you want to count a Daniel Sepulveda, but I won't.

With 10 years of drafts, Mike Tomlin and co. basically have less than a 1 in 10 shot of getting a great player in any of today's rounds. But odds are none of today's players are going to matter.

Maybe we should just trade away these picks in the future to move up in rounds 1-3 and get a better shot at better prospects in the early rounds?

Actually, thinking about the 3rd round picks during the Tomlin era, we're not so successful with those either. Maybe the Steelers should really focus on the 1st 2 rounds and trade away the rest?

We seem to have moderate success with UDFAs anyway. Why not get better premium picks and build through UDFAs and FAs?

Not sure how the rest of the league does with these rounds, but on the surface, I bet there's a case to support dumping certain picks to improve odds in earlier rounds.

    Bryant threw himself away

I think every team in the NFL has a low hit rate in Rounds 4-7. However didn't almost everyone we picked last year in those rounds except one make the roster. How is that throw away?
"My team, may they always be right, but right or wrong...MY TEAM!"

No one would miss any of them. All easily replaceable parts.

Although I like Ayers. Then again, I like everyone.

What does the model franchise do in the draft?:

        DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE
New England spent 53 percent of its picks on defensive players, among the highest percentages in the league over this span. Five of the 10 teams devoted the largest portion of choices to that side of the ball participated in at least one Super Bowl during the decade. At the other end of the spectrum: Five of the seven clubs that used the smallest part of their picks on defense wound up with sub-.500 record, including the bottom-of-the-barrel Rams, whose 46 wins are the fewest in the league.

Which is skewed, because if you have Brady who can put up 30 pts a game with a merry go around of receivers , then you could draft like that.

How many "GREAT" players do you think every other team averages? Come on? I bet bet half the league would be hard to find one

This analysis would suggest Tomlin's rate of success is about average:
Wild Success = 2 Pro Bowls, 7 years as a starter, or 125 games played.
Data is from 1988 onward (7 round format),
