Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell landed in some hot water this summer when he was arrested on pot charges, but it didn’t impact his role as the team’s starter in the backfield.
It also hasn’t affected his performance. Bell has expanded his production beyond what he did as a rookie in 2013 and found new heights over the last three weeks. Bell has produced more than 200 yards in total offense in each of the last three games, culminating with last Sunday’s performance against the Bengals.
Bell ran 26 times for 185 yards and two touchdowns and he caught six passes for 50 yards and another score in a 42-21 win that boosted Pittsburgh’s playoff chances. The NFL has recognized that performance by naming Bell the AFC offensive player of the week for the first time in his career.
Bell’s rise in production has coincided with a jump in his workload, something that’s led Ben Roethlisberger to say he hoped the team doesn’t run the back into the ground. Mike Tomlin hasn’t shared the same concern and Bell’s play isn’t doing anything to discourage putting the ball in his hands as much as possible.
