    Play-action

Don’t have numbers for this year, but this is really something. Last six seasons, they’re dead last in PA yards by large margin. It’s just not something they like to do.

For a team that likes to run this much, that seems odd.

That's not going to improve if Justin Fields is our QB1 next season.

Play action is one problem. But here's the bigger problem; RZ TD%. Not only were the Steelers near the bottom of the league, they have gotten worse each of the last three years, from 22nd, 25th, to 29th. Even CLE was better than the Steelers this season. Scheme, QB, talent, coaching, are all at fault with this team.

        They were 50% with Fields.

Congratulations to Fields, that would have ranked them 25th had it stuck the whole season (which I doubt). That is the same as a Pickett/Rudolph/Canada/Faulkner offense... yoi.

I think it was on the Matt Williamson youtube series on the offense where he pointed out that the Steelers threw the ball into the EZ from the red zone fewer times than almost anyone. Maybe nothing changes until they stop valuing FGs over TDs.

Interesting. I think some posters mentioned how once the Steelers got to the RZ it got even more predictable with run, run, pass. Living in their fears, despite what the HC says.

The other crime that occurred in the RZ? Washington with 2 targets on the season, while Jefferson had 4 times that many.

I think the biggest reason is how often the QB lines up in shotgun. PA doesn't have nearly the same affect. I haven't seen the numbers, but memory tells me that when the switch was made to Russ, there was a lot more QB under center and PA at the beginning. As the season went on, there seemed like much less PA.

RZ is where scheme is magnified, just not a lot of space to work open, need to use motion and deception, not just pound up the middle and then loft a 50/50 ball.

There was just a 3 part series on "Scouts Eye" doing a deep dive into the offense.

Basic conclusion was that even though the ppg was NFL average, we were bad to very bad in a wide variety of things. Some thing I remember are: we run way too much on 2nd a long (such a waste of a down), we generally suck at 1st down...which means we get to 3rd down more than almost every team, we get sacked more than almost ever team even though our "time to scramble" is among the highest in the league (this was surprising to me because I was of the opinion that our OL wasn't giving time to our QBs)...I'm sure there are lots more.
