It's funny how 17M$ per will help you swallow your pride. Do you think that's what it's about?

Tomlin must smooze Rooney with claims like "we're this close, we have a young team, things are on the rise, you can't cut it off now or everything we've built will be for naught, I just need that one last shot to show it will work, etc...etc"

I don’t think anybody shmoozes anybody. I believe both of them are happy with the situation. They are making money. They still have local media kissing their arses. Still have plenty of national media talking about non losing seasons, 3 HCs, etc etc. They probably want the Steelers to have the HC with the all time nfl wins and will drag this out until they do.
winning meaningful games is not the priority to these guys or the fans that still blindly support them.
How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?

Getting Tomlin the all time NFL wins does seem to be more of a priority than anything else at this point for the organization. Rooney has to make sure Tomlin is all comfy, no coaching changes, no, can't do that, now let's see if we can get that non-losing season in tact, Mike, can't wait.

They do? Besides people who regularly interview Tomlin, like Pompeani and Labriola, overwhelming majority have turned against him. Turn on 93.7 the Fan, there isn’t a single host who defends him anymore. Most of the local guests (Batko, Fittipaldo, Rowntree, etc.) are the same, all calling for his firing and have been for years.

Tim Benz: Forget Mike Tomlin 'living in his fears,' it's Art Rooney II we should be talking about

              Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025

One of Mike Tomlin’s favorite catchphrases is, “We don’t live in our fears.” The Pittsburgh Steelers coach says it all the time when he feels like using some old-fashioned football coach machismo to justify a roll of the dice on a fourth down play call, a long field goal attempt,

I'm not even sure what to make of this. An odd thing for the owner to ask players whether they still want to play for the HC?

The organization is more about Mike Tomlin than it is winning Super Bowls now. Back in the day, players loved LeBeau but the org knew it was time to move on.

Maybe, maybe not. More embarrassing posts like this one may force Rooney to rethink his thinking on how to build a winning team.

Ya know, I still struggle with the idea of the small staff being a Rooney thing being cheap, or is this Tomlin not wanting more coaches to have to interact with? We all know he likes the player interactions, and having a bigger staff would take time away from that (if he was doing his job right).

You saw how quickly they got rid of Flores. Maybe it’s both. OSU’s DC just signed with PSU for $3M/year, more than 3 times what the Steelers are paying Teryl Austin to pretend to be the DC.

Rooney continues spreading his message of mediocrity and tells fans to stop complaining, we have winning seasons, after all. And forget about trading TJ ever, having one-uniform guys is more important than winning Super Bowls.

I'm really starting to dislike this guy, what a condescending, out of touch and jackass thing to say to one of the most loyal fanbases in sports, a fanbase that has lined his pockets. What happened to what he said last year about winning a playoff game? What a phony.

I really hope he just sells the team or steps down asap.

And Rooney sez he's not planning to retire-- so I guess we can expect the same ol' same ol' indefinitely

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been blasted since the end of the regular season for their inability to be more than just a free win for whoever they face in the playoffs. Good is nev

                                In case you were still wondering why Austin is with the team;

                                Screenshot 2025-02-05 073126 by R W, on Flickr

No legitimate DC will work for pauper's wages. Then you add the 'Tomlin runs the defense' factor and it's no wonder this team is stagnating.
