Pickens showed up late to Christmas game

Just heard DeFabo telling this story on The Fan. One thing he said that is not in this article is that he asked other players if this was a big deal, and they just shrugged it off with “That’s just George”.

Then he reminded us that Bell did the same for the Jacksonville AFCC Game.

This is all enabled by the man in charge, who has learned nothing from his past failures.

It’s a big offseason for George Pickens, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The Pittsburgh Steelers have a decision to make about his future with the team. While his play often looks well worth a contract extension, some of his on- and off-field antics do not. After reports of him showing […]

The best path forward is to trade Pickens. We can't afford to have players like him on the team.

If they do this, please do it before the draft so we get picks THIS year. We have no WRs without GP. And we'll need two starters.

IMO it's hard to look at any kind of offseason plan (thanks Hackjam!) and not think that what we need it to embrace a full rebuild. Which means there should be a few years here where we're not competitive for a payoff berth.

But I think the directive from Rooney will be the exact opposite of that.

Tim Benz snuck that question in at the very end of the Tomlin presser and caught him flat-footed before he gave a week “I don’t recall” answer.

If he’s doing this to preserve his trade value, fine, but if he comes back he’s going to go full AB next year.

When we threw him the ball in playoff game he was open & caught them. Had a TD. Questionable push off call negated another long catch....Why don't we get rid of the players NOT producing for once eh?? We have so few doing their jobs & that's who fans whine constantly about because they don't like them as people off the field. Should have targeted Pickens 15-20 times in the playoff game

One thing I'll certainly give Khan credit for is that he has been good at filling the obvious holes in FA before the draft.

If they trade GP (or maybe even if they don't), think they need to either target one of Higgins or Godwin OR acquire a WR of similar caliber via trade. Then maybe go after like Amari Cooper as a low buy and hope he has another year or two left in the tank. Then draft a guy where it makes sense. Or rather, maybe this is where Roman Wilson, who I constantly forget exists, comes in. Then target KaVontae Turpin.

WR room of Godwin/Higgins, Cooper, Wilson, CAIII, Turpin, and maybe a draft pick... Certainly has potential. And you have both KR and PR duties covered.

Though thinking about it, they usually have a core special teamer in that group, don't they (think DHB, Ben Skowronek). Hmmmmmm

I think we should do both. Get rid of the players that aren't producing, and players like Pickens who flat out quit trying in the last game of the regular season. I don't want players on the roster like Pickens who keep fighting with fans and are bad teammates. I'm not saying Pickens isn't super talented but man he makes it near impossible to root for him considering his disruptive antics.

We had issues at WR and slot corner all year because he failed at this last offseason.

FWIW, I think this was not the case this year re: WR and slot CB. And I think it bit us in both cases.

I think the issue was probably that there was too much to do in one season. And I think it was a good idea that we didn't want to mortgage too much of the future to get Aiyuk. A good call IMO.

Pickens is a clown, but you have to pay/keep him.

Guys like HIggins, Godwin, Cooper, etc are great #2's. They are not #1 WRs, and never will be. Plus, Godwin and Higgins make their living in the middle of the field, an area which Tomlin refuses to believe exists.

If we let Pickens go, it's Tyreek or bust for me. But regardless, we have to address WR2.

Once again, I wonder if he was really hurt or if we used that as cover for his suspension for conduct detrimental towards the team.

Pickens would be #3 in Cincy and Detroit, maybe LA if Kupp is healthy. Outside of the good sideline catch every other week he’s fairly meh. Meh route runner, lousy effort when he’s not the primary, ghost in the run game. Throw in the team cancer issues and it’s a no brainer to dump him.

They’ll never do it because Tomlin doesn’t want to, but I’d sign Higgins and draft Egbuka. Wilson returns to play slot then you have something. Again, though, not happening until they value more than layups and 3-pointers in the passing game.

Why would they do that? Wouldn't that make the punishment less effective?

I think he's probably a high end WR2 on a good offense. Could be a medium to high end WR1 if he worked on route running and "compete level".

I think you want a better route runner to get the 100+ targets (but maybe I was just spoiled by AB).
