IIRC Austin was also under contract and I don't think Rooney would let him go and still pay him.
That’s a long-winded way of saying Flores wouldn’t be Tomlin’s puppet and eventual scapegoat.

Tomlin’s megalomania has sunk this franchise.

Hire the best people and let them do their jobs.

I don't think so. But none of us know.

I know that's the story you're looking to tell.

Lol, I’m just recounting Keith Butler’s story.

Keith Butler revealed Monday that Mike Tomlin didn't just call defensive plays throughout his time as the team's defensive coordinator, he did so in the final seasons Dick LeBeau was the team's coordinator, as well.

          Interesting...I'd never seen that before.

I do remember Butler saying that there was some give and take between them because he was more about rush and Tomlin was more about coverage (I think having that kind of balance would be good).

Taking calling duties away from LeBeau would be silly IMO. Not a good move. And very egotistical.

Taking them away from Butler (or never giving them to Austin) is more understandable.

I also think that Tomlin essentially didn't have a play sheet / card at that time. So if he was just calling things from his head...not good. If it was more like Butler would suggest a couple things and Tomlin would pick that's a little more acceptable I guess?

I think it has generally be better for both Cowher and Tomlin to have good (to great) coordinators that drive that side of the ball.

          Hoping we get to that.

Yikes... >$18mil per year? Doesn't look like a very good return on investment

on ESPN sports talk heard someone say, In a highly results driven profession/league Mike Tomlin has somehow convinced Steelers upper management that results don't really matter. Impressive.

That’s happened across organizations in all fields in the last 10-15 years.

18 mil a year to win 9 or 10 games a year is quite the feat. We tip our hat to him if you will. I can't wait to hear Rooney's post-season address - "We think Mike has our team on the right track, we saw some really positive things". Where's the gif of the kid laughing and then crying in front of the reporter.

                        Obviously.

I think whoever said this doesn't understand the prime objective of the Steelers.

I think it's pretty clear if you look at this team since Cowher was hired, that the prime objective is to "just make the playoffs" because "once you're in the playoffs anything can happen".

                            Nutting doesn't.

I noticed the Commanders CBs wore yellow gloves vs Philly. Fire Quinn!

                                Dont be confused.
Rooney is getting the results HE wants.
How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?
