I don't think you are really teaching guys how to play DB at the NFL level. If Sutton blows his assignment or doesn't know his assignment at this stage of the season then that's on Sutton. Im confident Suttons assignments were communicated to him in practice, film study, and in the meeting rooms. If you want hire a great D coordinator, I'm all for it, who is he, where is he, and why has nobody else hired him yet?

If Tomlin was terrified of Flores he would’ve never offered him a chance to coach in Pittsburgh. This was more of a favor to Flores to help him stay in the league because once you are out of a gig for a year the NFL is quick to move on, especially if you are suing the NFL.

Now, putting Cam Sutton in over Bishop may have been the worst move Tomlin and Austin made. Kills team morale to play a vet who has been out for that long and he just jumps over a young guy who was actually playing good ball.

He wasn’t “terrified”, he just wants to run the D his way and Flores is his own man, and frankly, it appears he’s a much better defensive coach than Tomlin is.

Loss for the organization, win for Tomlin’s megalomania, which Rooney fully supports.

I’m serious, I think GM and potentially part owner are in his future if he wants it.

Did you watch the tape breakdown? Wasn't just Sutton. There's way too much shoulder shrugging, finger pointing, and arm waving after the plays.

Regarding Austin's replacement, look to poach from Flores or Vic Fangio's staff. Tomlin would need to stay out of the room and let the DC do his job.

DK mentioned the Steelers play a ton of Cover 3, and I get that because it's supposed to be an easy defense to learn and execute. What with all the subs playing right now maybe it's the safest thing to do. But a good QB is going find the holes in this defense and attacked it. More complicated zone matching or man matching might be a better option but this would probably end up a disaster with the Steelers communcation problems. Maybe they need to draft smarter players?

I don't think Tomin is terrified of anyone. But he wants to be in full control and wouldn't necessarily have that with Flores as a longer-term coach. I think Tomlin knew it was a very short-term thing to help out Flores in Pittsburgh and that's why he felt comfortable with it. Plus, it's a bit of a power move in and of itself, bringing in Flores at that particular point in time.

Was that the one where Sutton went "rogue" and blitzed when he shouldn't have?

Yes, Austin should be canned, but nothing on D will change much because Tomlin will still be in charge of it

Reposting a month old writeup on Queen as the green dot wearer. Should they reconsider his role there given all the current communication problems? It's also possible that it is slowing Queen's game down having to worry about the call and getting everyone lined up right.

But, read P. Wilson's quote; "....Lot of it, sometimes, you just have to know what to do...[because of the noise and speed of the game]"

Chances are, communication isn’t the first thing you think of when you think about great linebacker play. That’s more of a quarterback focus. But that’s the reality for inside linebackers in today’s NFL. And Pittsburgh Steelers rookie LB Payton Wilson is learning all about that. Wilson isn’t shouldering all that responsibility as a rookie, though. […]

Perhaps not so coincidentally, those last couple years of LeBeau’s tenure, the D fell off a cliff.

NOBODY on this forum has praised Lebeau more than me. He is the best football mind in franchise history in my opinion.

But our defensive decline was TALENT. If all that mattered was Lebeaus mind he would have vindicated himself as DC of the Titans.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

I love listening to LeBeau in interviews.

And just letting Troy be Troy would probably have been better than most other coaches.

In this case, my guess is that it's not a trivial thing to design a defense that's successful that lets one guy basically do whatever he thinks is best on any given snap.

I also remember him saying in an interview that having Troy made him a better coach, but was said in a way that much of his "genius" was due to the fact that he had this guy who could do so much for him.

                                LeBeau is humble.

Can you imagine Billy B or Mcvay saying this?

I think in interviews it's easy to see why his players loved him.
