I thought Rex Ryan had a brilliant quote today. I'm paraphrasing because i'm too lazy to find it:

"i thought switching to wilson was a huge mistake, fields had you at 4-2, but it's clear I was wrong. That's why Tomlin will end up with a gold jacket some day and i won't"

    Classic Rex Ryan.

I don't think this move is indicative of the kind of thinking that gets you a gold jacket. But it made a TON of sense. I've been saying for a while now that the best way to properly evaluate Fields is to play Wilson. You have to see in-game comparisons of the two. We have ONE SEASON to evaluate these QBs we got on the cheap, to see if either is worth extending into the future. Tomlin did the right thing at exactly the right time, because Fields was doing just well enough to get us to 4-2 but not exactly lighting up the scoreboard. But it's not like it was some kind of genius move.

This type of leadership is why the Rooney's know what a great coach they have and want to keep him

OK, 3-4 weeks ago people were talking about extending Fields long term, months after saying we should sign Mason long term. How about we see how this plays out over the course of the season, including a much tougher second half schedule, before we stamp our approval in ink once again...

Pittsburgh Steelers thriving under stability that Mike Tomlin brings

You didn't see me post about extending Fields. He hadn't really proven anything at that point other than he could run an average offense. That's not a guy you sign as a starter long term.

Come on, Tomiln made the right call ... 3 weeks late. The bogus calf injury was his excuse to play Fields.
Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in seven years and counting. The earliest will be eight years. I guess that in Art Rooney's II, opinion is worth a 3 year extension.

Our 2024 draft looks to be grade A. Our 2023 draft is an A. The roster is talented, but Mike Tomlin is still the head coach.

*** Mike Tomlin is the best coach since the AFL- NFL merger that has not won a playoff game in 8 seasons or more. It's either him or Lewis. ***

You mean like complaining the coach only wants low scoring and then watchinging the team go for 30+ points in back to back weeks? Should we wait until the season plays out?

Wasn't calling you out, but there was a buzz in local media after the Chargers game about this. Russ had one peak and two valleys last year, let's let this play out.

BTW, he was still being coy yesterday, refusing to name a starter, which will get sillier as weeks go by.

The game plans were not markedly different, they broke tackles in FG range and got multiple short drives after turnovers the past two weeks. They also didn't kneel it out last week like they did vs. the Chargers.

Quality of competition matters, too. After Mason scored 30+ two weeks in a row, we returned right to 17 PPG against good teams.

Patience, grasshopper. They'll probably do it again this week as their cake first half schedule winds down. 2nd half of the schedule is much harder.

But why not take your own advice and wait until we see what plays out?

You mean literally the way that BOTH Russ (as a Seahawk) AND Tomlin (especially as a Buc) won SBs against higher octane QBs than they had? Smith knows a thing or two about benefiting from a back (from Alabama) breaking tackles.

I really believe we are doing a nice job of building a team like the Legion of Boom Seahawks.

That team CRUSHED the most prolific QB IN HISTORY. It is our only chance against the Mahommes and Allen’s of the league.

Feel free to remind us that our scoring average would be even higher if we did not simply choose not to score.

Yes, we need to worry about their offenses true. But the Chargers have the leagues number one scoring defense. And EVERY OTHER TEAM IN OUR DIVISION is bottom 6 in the conference in scoring defense. The Jets have allowed fewer points than anyone in our division.

We face plenty of good offenses, which is a concern. But defense?

Of the teams on our schedule only the Chiefs and Eagles have defenses on par with what we’ve already seen.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

Don't introduce facts when Chicken Little only wants to see the sky falling because it fits his agenda

Like I said before the season, everyone is wringing their hands about playing the other teams in the AFC North...I said then, and still believe, they should be wringing their hands about playing us!

I think Tomlin has made the right call. Maybe he did keep Russ out a bit longer to look at Fields or MAYBE, Russ was less than 100% so he used caution which could lead to a healthy Russ for the rest of the season?
