Pickett or Trubisky

I will be utterly shocked if Trubisky doesn't win the starter job. Coaches and scouts can say what they wish. NFL ready, played a rookie NFL season in college blah blah blah. It's all nonsense. Pickett doesn't throw with enough velocity to make a mistake against NFL secondaries. Having watched Moats commentary from watching OTAs you get a clearer picture of what I see. Trubisky throws a tight spiral with serious velocity. At least in practice, he states he doesn't miss. None of his balls are off. Pickett on the other hand he states will throw 8 good balls out of 10 and the other two ducks. He stated he started to see the criticism of his hand size in his throws. He needs time. I do not believe he is a plug and play.

This is an excellent post.
So with MT yeah we could get 10 wins imho. With Pickett yeah 6 wins might be the max or near the max for 2022.
Fast forward to the 23 NFL season. Can we win a Super Bowl with MT in 23? Can we win a SuperBowl with KP in 23? So who gives us the best shot to win it all a year from now n for the years beyond that? There is no right or wrong here. We are speculating.
I would rather take my lumps with Pickett this year to have a shot to contend in 23 n beyond. Perhaps he's not ready week one but if we're say around .500 mid year I'm getting KP in there even if we finish 6-11 or 7-10 so be it. I don't want to go 9-8 or so with MT and that's our ceiling. I don't care about no loosing seasons under Tomlin the goal is to win it all.
Kudos to Ovi for getting us thinking about how to look into the season ahead of us and the seasons beyond that.

This is the only way Pickett wins the job because at this stage in their careers he isn't the better QB. But, I don't see that happening. The Steelers don't eat seasons like that and take their lumps. Remember too, Tomlin has never had a losing season. You don't think that plays a factor? I mean all men in that position have an ego. I don't see any way Tomlin starts Pickett unless he believes he can win consistently. Not only that, turning a rookie QB loose to get abused can crush the greatest of confidence. I do not think it's wise. Give the guy a Mahomes year, let him learn and get better. I think much of what is said by the coaches is to push Trubisky.

I agree, he'll win the job, he's a training camp warrior, it's what he does during the season vs. a tough schedule that will lead to his hook.

Possibly, I can't deny that. I think what Trubisky lacks is that ability to deliver under pressure which is a big deal. You can't teach that. Maybe you can improve. But, the greatest QBs have ice water in their veins. That's Trubisky's achilles heel. Mechanically he is sound. He throws a pretty ball. He moves well. He isn't terrible at reading a D. It's when you get in his face that he makes terrible mistakes. Is Pickett any better at that? Maybe. Time will tell. But, it takes a rare breed of human mentally to be a NFL QB.

Will Mitch be better than Ben? Maybe last year's broken version, sure, he retired a year too late. But...how much? Ben's PFF grades the last three years, excluding 2019.

2021: 55.2 (yuck, worst in his career)
2020: 69.0
2018: 78.2

Those three grades were good enough for 9-7-1, 12-4, and 8-8.

Mitch Trubisky's three years as a starter:

2018: 63.0
2019: 64.3
2020: 62.0

Pretty consistently meh. Is this going to be good enough to carry a roster with question marks at so many positions? How high does he have to grade to get this team to 10 wins?

Believe me, I'd love to be proven wrong. I live in Chicago, they're having a good time giving me crap for the Steelers signing him, I'd love to throw it back in their face.

Well I hope you guys are right. I don't want another 20 year drought at QB.

I'm afraid of this to but we have to have faith, hope and show support for our young QB. Otherwise we're all going to be miserable pricks like I am for the next 20 years. I'm extremely confident he's the best QB in this draft just like I thought Mac Jones was last season and Joe Burrow was the season before. Just don't ask me to evaluate an offensive lineman, I'll get that wrong nearly every single time. I'm like the Steelers are with corners when I evaluate o-linemen.

If you're correct [and why not?] it's Mitch's kiss of death.

What I like it that we are pretty much going to know right out the gate about Trubisky and the teams prospects for the season against the Bengals in the opener.

no.. we really won’t know anything after the first game regardless of the outcome

What did we learn after the Bills game last year?

We will know after the first 4 games but usually that first game is an outlier and not a sign of things to come.

I was so excited after that Bills game. I thought we could run a team like the 1st SB win. Great D and maybe something like average offense.

Maybe if we could have stayed healthy it could have turned out that way. But with 2/3 DL out, we turned into a sieve against the run.

exactly. The first game rarely tells us anything about the season.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Mitchell Trubisky QB

Kenny Pickett QB

This should be the most interesting quarterback competition of the summer. The Steelers watched Ben Roethlisberger walk away into retirement without having any true successor in-house at the time. Since then, they signed Trubisky in free agency and selected Pickett 20th overall in this year's draft. How this plays out before the regular season surely depends on how quickly Pickett can learn. For all the criticism of Trubisky at the end of his tenure in Chicago, the player drafted second overall in 2017 still has talent and experience working in his favor. He also spent the past season sitting behind Josh Allen in Buffalo and learning from Brian Daboll, the former Bills offensive coordinator who now works as head coach of the New York Giants. The 27-year-old is the safe choice here. Pickett, 24, is the future of the franchise, the local guy who starred at Pitt and spent his entire career practicing in the same building where the Steelers work daily. They know him better than any other player they could've drafted at the position. The best-case scenario here is that Trubisky is consistent enough to be an effective starter, while Pickett can learn without being thrown into the fire too soon. That sounds good in theory. We'll see how it actually plays out.

Disagree…
We had a QB in slow decent last year. That’s not the case this year at the most important position on the team. We will know a lot after game 1 because we are playing the team favored to win our division and we’ll see just how we stack up.

I was very surprised when we beat Buffalo on the road last season in our opener.

I'll be even more surprised if we beat the Bengals after the way they beat us so easily in both games last year, especially since they have addressed the OL which was their biggest weakness.

Tomlin usually spends the first month of games moving players around to get a feel for their strengths and weaknesses. It will take a few games to know what they are all about.

Ben didn’t win that game tho, that game was won by the defense. We had a lot of injuries after that game and lose Alualu for the year.

We hope Pickett wins the job because he's a 1st round quarterback and he's going to play at least 10 games unless he a total bust, which isn't likely. In general first round qb's are going to have to lose the hard way before they are labeled busts/disappointments or marginal staters that teams need to upgrade from...AKA Sam Darnold or Baker Mayfield. This can set a franchise back 3-5 years until they get a new QB but that is the game.

Let it be an open competition which really means tie goes to Pickett because he's going to get better in theory. I have a hunch Turbisky is going to surprise some people because he was stuck on the Bears who lacked weapons around him, and he is physically the better player. He wasn't the second pick of the draft for nothing, though I had a last first round grade on him due to lack of playing time and level of competition. My edge goes to Trubisky but I hope Pickett is better.

There's little doubt in my mind Trubisky is the more physically gifted QB. He throws a harder tighter spiral. He drives through his throws. He has a better arm. He has proven he can win and compete at the next level. He wins the starting job. Now the question is...can he keep it? We have an incredibly tough schedule, And my main issue with Trubisky is his decision making. Some of the balls he throws it's like WTF were you thinking? Like what did you see? If that isn't corrected he will lose us a big game and get yanked. At that point you'll see Pickett who I do believe makes better decisions, is probably cooler under pressure but is an inferior arm talent. I don't see Pickett ever becoming the guy you put the team on his back and he wills his team to victory. I just don't. But, I do think he can be a quality NFL QB with time. He can be a game manager+ who wont lose you games, and might win you a few too. With a quality running game and legit D, we will be competitive.
