160 guaranteed is not bad over 5 years, but will wait to see the particulars, and what opt outs are in place
Seems fair to me, in 12 months it won't even be a top 6 contract.
Feels like teams will need to figure out how to win with rookie QB contracts and potentially avoid the future big deals.

Two things:
1) This deal has an AAV of $46.1M, while TJ Watt's deal (which some said was like a franchise QB contract when it was signed) has an AAV of $28M (61% of a market level QB contract).
2) I wonder how long before Mahomes has a new deal with these upgraded values. IMO, there is no way he plays until 2031 without getting a significant pay bump. Especially if they keep doing well. Contracts will probably pass $50M/year AAV in a year or two for QBs.

Keep elite guys while they are still elite (TJ).
Don't spend a ton of money on guys who are good but not elite (DJ?).
Should the idea above about not breaking the bank for non-elite (let's say top 10% of starters at their position?) hold for QBs too?

as a Steelers fan, gotta love how you blame Tomlin our head coach for our lack of playoff success but with the Ravens it's all the QBs fault. :roll:

Spending a ton of your cap on a market setting QB makes you uncompetitive.
Unless you're the Steelers.
Then everything is Tomlin's fault.
By now I think we should all accept that franchises aren’t concerned with winning SB’s while QB’s are on the cheap.
Its great if it happens but they are going to pay to keep a franchise QB who they THINK can win a SB because as long as fans believe it they are going to recoup their investment.

plus I think you need to do whatever it takes to have a franchise QB as your starter.
the Rams just proved that.
Probably true even though this doesn’t typically work.
Actually a Bill Cowher model of building a team without a QB could be the way to go given the rules are so weighted toward making every QB good.
Not even sure top QBs should get top QB money.
