The Steelers are working out former Patriots outside linebacker Markell Carter and outside linebacker Ryan Baker today, according to a league source. Carter was released by the Patriots this spring. Carter is a former Patriots sixth-round draft pick who spent last season on the practice squad. At Central Arkansas, the 6-foot-4, 252-pounder registered 143 career tackles and 16 1/2 sacks. Baker is an undrafted rookie free agent from LSU.

Limas Sweed Working Out for Cincinnati Bengals

Photo

It seems a familiar face is emerging in the news.

Or hands. Or the head that holds that face.

Cincinnati Enquirer Joe Reedy tweeted a source confirmed to him former Steelers WR Limas Sweed was in Cincinnati for a workout this weekend.

Sweed, a well-known draft bust from the second round of 2008, was released last season after a career of injuries and a big case of the dropsies.

Even with the sometimes maddening stoppages in his career development, many backed Sweed to the bitter end, making him easily one of the most popular Steelers' draft picks in recent memory. He just never could quite get it all together on the field, or between the ears.

Perhaps he needed some (more) time away from the game. Cincinnati, a franchise known very well for giving players second chances to revitalize careers stalled for whatever reason, could pick Sweed up on the cheap and get him to finally realize the potential everyone felt he had when the 6-foot-4 receiver came out of Texas four years ago.

Then again, the word "potential" has been used ad naseum in regards to Sweed, and it's perhaps the only positive thing that can be said about him as a football player.
