Report: Steelers RB Coach Kirby Wilson Could Be Out Of Hospital Soon

There has been quite a bit of sad news this week in Steeler Nation as we have seen several long time veteran players such as Hines Ward, Aaron Smith and James Farrior get released, but there is some positive news to report. Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Marcus Gilbert reported via Twitter today that he visited running backs coach Kirby Wilson in the hospital today and said that Wilson looks great, is walking and still smiling like always. Gilbert added that he should be out of the hospital soon as he recovers from burns and smoke inhalation suffered after his house caught fire early in January.

Steelers.com released a statement today updating fans about the condition of running backs coach Kirby Wilson.

“Mr. Wilson remains in serious condition in the Trauma Burn Center at UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh. His status is stable, and he has started his physical rehabilitation. The Wilson family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support.”

Steelers RB coach Wilson begins rehab program

Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson remains hospitalized with severe burns but has started a physical rehabilitation program.
Wilson suffered burns on more than 45 percent of his body after a fire broke out in the kitchen of his home.
He is in serious condition at the Trauma Burn Unit at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.
"His status is stable, and he has started his physical rehabilitation," the Steelers said in a statement. "The Wilson family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support."

Steelers Running Backs Coach Kirby Wilson Remains Hospitalized, Family Releases Statement

The Steelers released a statement on running backs coach Kirby Wilson, who was badly burned in a house fire before Pittsburgh's 29-23 (OT) loss at Denver in the Wild Card round of the AFC Playoffs.

Wilson remains in the hospital, and the injury will require further surgical procedures in the future.

The statement reads:

Mr. Kirby Wilson remains in critical condition in the Trauma Burn Center at UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh. In addition to burns sustained over 45 percent of his body, he has suffered a smoke inhalation injury and will require multiple operative procedures in the future.

The Steelers web site also added:

The 50-year-old Wilson, in his fifth season with the Steelers is an original member of Mike Tomlin's inaugural coaching staff.

Wilson is from Los Angeles, and he played running back and wide receiver at Illinois before playing briefly in the Canadian Football League. He had coached running backs with four different NFL teams - New England, Washington, Arizona and Tampa Bay - before coming to the Steelers when Tomlin hired him in 2007.

Wilson is known by all who work for the Steelers as a man with a ready smile and a pleasant demeanor regardless of the circumstances. As a coach, he is known to his players as a tireless worker and a high-energy guy who is demanding yet fair.

Running Back Coach Kirby Wilson Burned Badly in Morning Fire at Home

Steelers running back Kirby Wilson was badly burned in an early morning house fire in Seven Fields, Pennsylvania. According reports, Wilson was flown to a Pittsburgh-area hospital.

Steelers president Art Rooney II has issued the following statement:

“First and foremost our thoughts and prayers are with Kirby and his entire family. We are saddened to hear about this unfortunate situation but we know that he has the best medical care in the country treating him. The entire organization is praying for Kirby to have a full recovery and we will be by his side through this difficult time.”

Wilson, 50, is in his fifth season with the Steelers after coaching running backs with the Arizona Cardinals (2004-06), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2002-03), Washington Redskins (2000), and New England Patriots (1997-99). Wilson coached on Pete Carroll’s staff at USC in 2001.
