Steelers unlikely to decrease Mike Wallace’s tender

The Steelers aren’t close to a new deal with restricted free agent Mike Wallace and he is not expected to attend mandatory minicamp later this month. However, the Steelers are committed to doing a long term deal with him and are reportedly highly unlikely to decrease Mike Wallace’s tender, something they can do on June 15th. They have the right to decrease his tender from 2.742 million to 577 thousand, but they won’t do that, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, because they feel that would be damaging to long term talks and don’t want to slap their #1 receiver in the face like that.
Mike Wallace said earlier this offseason that he was looking for Larry Fitzgerald money. Fitzgerald got 120 million over 8 years last offseason and in the time since Wallace asked for that type of money, Calvin Johnson got 132 million over 7 years. However, the Steelers probably don’t have the cap to do that type of deal even if they wanted to.
If he wants a long term deal, he’ll probably have to settle...

Steelers Unlikely To Have Cap Room To Sign OT Demetrius Bell

Scott Brown of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review writes that the Steelers aren’t in a position to become serious bidders for OT Demetrius Bell. Pittsburgh has some cap space to work with ($ 5.8 million according to recent NFL Team Cap Space numbers), but they may need that depending on what happens with WR Mike Wallace who has yet to sign his restricted free agent tender. Bell will meet with the Eagles at some point today and considering the recent loss of Jason Peters, they would figure to be one of the top suitors for him. Report: Healthy Mendenhall unlikely

The Steelers do not expect running back Rashard Mendenhall to be fully recovered until the 2013 NFL season as he continues to mend following a torn anterior cruciate ligament, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Monday, citing sources.

The 2012 season will be the final year of his contract, and it is reportedly possible Mendenhall has had his last carry with the team.

The sources said that if Mendenhall does return next season, the Steelers do not expect him to perform at the level he was at before he succumbed to the injury, while playing against the Browns in their last game of the 2011 regular season.

Despite the concern, the team is still unlikely to re-sign free agent Mewelde Moore, according to the report. That would likely leave the team with Isaac Redman as its starter. Redman, a fourth-year player, has started only one NFL game and has 726 rushing yards and three touchdowns in 163 career carries.

Mendenhall finished with 928 rushing yards and nine touchdowns last season.
