He looks real good.” Butler claims he spoke to Woodley during the offseason about getting…

Steelers WR Plaxico Burress Happy For More Time To Get Into Shape And Learn Offense

Veteran wide receiver Plaxico Burress was signed late in November last season due to the injuries suffered by both Antonio Brown and Jerricho Cotchery and because of that it took him a while to get into football shape and learn the offense.

The Steelers re-signed Burress to a one-year deal at the start of free agency this past offseason and the fo…

RB Dwyer Says He’s Getting More in Shape for 2012

Jonathan Dwyer has been in Mike Tomlin’s doghouse for being overweight. Dwyer is set to be the backup running back to Isaac Redman when the Steelers start the season Sept. 9 in Denver. That is, if he comes into training camp in shape, Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

“I am pretty sure he has gotten it now,” Redman said. “I feel a light bulb went off in his head, and he is going to come to camp ready to go.”

Dwyer’s actions are saying the same.

Prodded by two of the NFL’s best running backs in Maurice Jones-Drew and Matt Forte — they share the same agent — Dwyer will spend the next four weeks in North Miami Beach, Fla., at Pete Bommarito Performance Systems ensuring he will arrive at St. Vincent College on July 25 in the best shape of his life.

“They asked me to come down, and I see how successful they are and how the training is and felt it was a good idea,” Dwyer said. “I thought to myself that I would be a fool not to go train down there with them.”

“I am just realizing how much it takes to get where you are in this league and how hard you have to work and push yourself,” Dwyer said. “This is my year to prove something to myself, the league, to the organization, that I am worth more than what I was.”

Dwyer started workouts this week and will remain in Florida until the day before camp.

“I know if I come in at the weight I am supposed to be, I will be OK,” Dwyer said. “It is not anybody else’s responsibility to come into camp in shape. It is mine.”

“Dwyer has all the talent in the world,” Redman said. “He can run the ball; he can block; he can catch out of the backfield. With him, it is all about him being able to come to camp in shape.”

Steelers’ Ziggy Hood got himself into shape

Ziggy Hood made several starts last year in place of the injured Aaron Smith and graded out as ProFootballFocus’ worst 3-4 defensive end. However, Hood was a 1st round pick in 2009 and the Steelers still have a lot of hope for him as he is expected to take over full time for the now departed Smith in 2012.
In an effort to make good on his upside, Hood, who admits he was sluggish down the stretch last season, says he has lost 20 pounds of fat this offseason and added 18 pounds of muscle and has dropped his body fat percentage from 24% to 18%. Hood will have the first crack at the starting job, but could be pushed by 2011 1st round pick Cameron Heyward if he continues to struggle. Now that he’s in shape, he could easily have a break out year in his 4th year in the league.

Steelers secure Keenan Lewis, Ryan Mundy, Isaac Redman and others as the roster continues to take shape

*** Discuss this article and more at our Pittsburgh Steelers forum ***

These last 2 weeks have nothing short of glorious if you’re a Steelers fan. Ramon Foster and David Johnson sign their tender offers, Jerricho Cotchery is brought back on a 2 yr. deal and a reserve Tight End Leonard Pope comes over from Kansas City. And now today as was previously reported, Charlie Batch is back for his annual contract to backup Ben Roethlisberger. How can you not love that!
Then, not to be outdone, today the remaining restricted free agents all signed their 1 yr. offers from the team. Keenan Lewis, Ryan Mundy both will return in 2012 as well as exclusive rights free agents Isaac Redman, Jeremy Kapinos and Steve McLendon also agree to their contracts*. It’s a flurry of activity from the front office to get all those players under contract as the draft gets closer and closer.
Ok, maybe it wasn’t quite on the standards of glorious or even epic but it was good news nonetheless as the roster for the new team begins to take shape. Sprinkle in some draft …
