Steelers shut down Jets in second half

The Jets offensive breakthrough of last week lasted into the second quarter of Sunday’s game with the Steelers. They led 10-6 after two scoring drives in two tries and looked fairly sharp on their way up and down the field in both cases. Things came screeching to a halt at that point, however. Sanchez would…ProFootballTalk » Pittsburgh Steelers

Second Round Pick Mike Adams signs with Steelers

Second Round Pick Mike Adams has come to terms with the Steelers.  He signed a 4 year deal yesterday.  The numbers for the contract are not known as of yet.  Adams is the fourth member of the Steelers draft class to sign.  They still have five players left to get inked including first round pick David DeCastro.
Adams has the potential to start this season.  He will need to improve his game.  Get a little stronger and keep his head on straight.  If he does that the Steelers have a prototypical left tackle that they got in the second round.  That would be more then a steal.

Steelers Come to Terms with Second Round Pick OT Mike Adams

Ed Bouchette tweeted Tuesday evening the Steelers signed OT Mike Adams to a contract, without citing any terms.

Adams, a highly touted but baggage-laden second round pick from Ohio State is the fourth Steelers draft pick to sign following 4th round pick Alameda Ta'amu, 5th round pick Chris Rainey and 7th round pick Toney Clemons.

Adams reportedly tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, but a trip to Pittsburgh and a discussion with Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and head coach Mike Tomlin put him back on their draft board.

Thought to be a first round talent, the Steelers scooped him up when he fell to the bottom third of the second round. He will likely compete for the back-up left tackle position, but the amount of injuries and general instability the Steelers have had in recent years suggests he may see the field frequently.

Fellow rookie offensive lineman, and mini camp roommate, OG David DeCastro, TE David Paulson, CB Terrence Frederick and OG Kelvin Beachum are the remaining draft picks who haven't signed yet.

Steelers Ink Second Round Pick Mike Adams

The Steelers continue to get their draft picks inked, as Scott Brown on the Trib reports the team has come to terms with second round pick Mike Adams.

The 6-foot-7, 323 pound OL is expected to step right in and be a starter as a tackle from day one for a Steelers team that needs help on a revamped O-line.

Adams played in just 32 games for OSU, missing time with shoulder and knee injuries, as well as disciplinary issues. Adams was suspended for two games as a sophomore for violating team rules and was suspended for the first five games of his senior season for receiving improper benefits from a tattoo parlor.

Prior to the 2012 NFL Draft, Adams tested positive for marijuana at the 2012 Scouting Combine, cementing his status as a second round pick.

Steelers Second Round Pick: OT Mike Adams

Photo

Despite his reported issues with speed rushers, as well as off-the-field concerns including testing positive for marijuana at the NFL Combine, if Mike Adams is anything, he's gutsy.

It was reported the Steelers had taken Adams off their draft board after news of his failed drug test broke. Adams hopped in a car and drove to Pittsburgh to talk to the Steelers, and own up to his mistake.

Such accountability and maturity, even in the face of a lack of both of those things, has to make one think twice in a flash-evaluation of the talented but underachieving tackle.

Clearly, he convinced the Steelers, who selected him with the 56th overall pick in the draft.

On the positive side, Adams is incredibly athletic, and has a classic frame for a tackle. He's battle tested, logging hundreds of snaps in the Big 10. On the negative, he was one of the "Tattoo Five" at Ohio State, leading to concerns about his judgement, and his 19 reps on the bench press at the Combine brings up questions of his dedication (Steelers first round pick, OG David DeCastro, did 34 reps).

In defense of him, people make mistakes, and if his greatest crime is smoking pot and selling crappy merchandise from a Bowl game, it's unlikely the FBI is tapping his phone. To savage him, a failed drug test at the Combine carries with it no excuse and is rightly branded as one of the dumbest things a draft prospect could do.

The situation is what it is. Adams may be in the doghouse in the eyes of some fans, but it's now the Steelers' doghouse. While offensive line coach Sean Kugler has to feel like a kid at Christmas, considering the Steelers selected two offensive linemen in the first two rounds of the draft for the first time in the modern era, with the closest equivalent being 1976, when they took a tight end, Bennie Cunningham, and a tackle, Ray Pinney.

The Steelers seemingly like to take high-risk, high-upside kinds of players in the second round, and 2012, as it sits now, doesn't appear to be any different - maybe a bit more extreme, maybe not. All they can do now is take Adams at his word, and work with him to get him ready to contribute to the revamped Steelers offensive line.
