NFL Supplemental Draft 2012: Quality Prospects Available, but Don’t Expect the Steelers to Make a Pick

Photo

The NFL Supplemental Draft will take place at 1 p.m. July 12, and this year there are six prospects eligible for the draft. Unlike last year, when there was just one marquee prospect and nothing else, this years class of Supplemental Draft prospects has two guys who could be late round draft picks.

Josh Gordon, a former Baylor WR, has great size and speed and is a decent project prospect. At 6'4" and 220 pounds, he could become a great deep threat in the NFL. He needs to improve his route running to become a good WR in the NFL. The other good prospect in this draft is Ed Wesley from TCU. The former Horned Frogs running back is only 5'9" but he is very shifty and has good moves. He could become a decent third down back in the NFL if he keeps his head on straight.

Despite these two prospects that headline this Supplemental Draft, don't expect any of the prospects to garner more then a fifth round pick at best. The other four prospects are Quaylon Ewing, Adam Harris, Adrian Haughton, Larry Lumpkin, Montez Robinson, and Houston Tuminello. None of these guys are likely to be drafted although Ewing, a 6'2" cornerback from Boise State could be a nice project for someone to pick up.

I have heard that some people believe that the Steelers could be a suiter for Josh Gordon because of Mike Wallace's holdout but don't expect the Steelers to end their streak of not selecting players in the Supplemental Draft. However, as we all know, the Steelers do not draft players out of the Supplemental Draft. Since I was born in 1993, it has happened exactly zero times. So, why would the Steelers spend a selection on a guy who was kicked off Baylor's football team for multiple drug problems? I just don't think it will happen.

Somebody that is very intriguing if he goes undrafted is Ed Wesley. Wesley had a couple good years at TCU before leaving the team for family reasons. He was expected to be the lead back for TCU next year. If he goes undrafted, the Steelers might give him a look. He is versatile and would give more competition in the backfield as the Steelers go through training camp and pre-season.

Poll
Would you spend a 2013 pick on any of the players in this draft? If so, who?

Steelers Talking with Prospects, Including Memphis DT Dontari Poe

The Steelers are chatting with a couple prospects, as the big one in town is Memphis defensive tackle Dontari Poe, a guy that many think the Steelers will take with their first round pick.

The Steelers are hosting five college prospects, including Memphis defensive tackle Dontari Poe, on the final day for pre-draft visits.

The 6-4, 346-pound Poe is considered a surefire first-round pick, and he is of particular interest to the Steelers considering veteran nose tackle Casey Hampton is going into the final year of his contract.

Poe sent his stock soaring at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, as he bench-pressed 225 pounds 44 times and ran a 4.98 in the 40-yard dash. He is one of the top defensive tackle prospects in the draft, and he may be gone before the Steelers’ first-round pick, No. 24 overall.

The Steelers are also meeting with Cincinnati tight end Adrien Robinson, SMU guard Kelvin Beachum, Arkansas wide receiver Gregory Childs and Colorado wide receiver Toney Clemons at their South Side headquarters.

Clemons is a local product, having starred at Valley High School in New Kensington. He started his college career at Michigan before transferring to Colorado.

Draft Prospects: Toney Clemons could provide late round value for the Steelers

We’re finally in the month of April, arguably the most important month in the offseason for any team as the NFL draft gets closer by the day.  The Steelers, as per usual, are quiet during the free agency period. They take care of their in house players by offering tenders to those they want to keep and move forward with draft preparations.
The wide receiver position, as early as last year, seemed to be full of promise for the future. Now it’s one that is definitely in question. There’s no need to keep beating the Mike Wallace dead horse; he’s still a Steeler and likely will remain so for at least 2012.  He’ll eventually sign his 1 yr. offer and with any luck the team will be able to get him signed long term during training camp or preseason.  Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders are still under contract for now and this offseason should be a lesson that even the highest rated restricted player rarely draws significant interest from other teams.  Both Brow...

Steelers Host Bills OT, Two Prospects

*** Discuss this article and more at our Pittsburgh Steelers forum ***

The Steelers are looking at a free agent from the Bills, and also are checking out a prospect from Miami of Ohio and a long snapper.

The team is meeting with Bills OT Demetrius Bell as well as guard Brandon Brooks and former Stanford long snapper Zachary Nolan.

Bell is 27, and has been a starter for a couple games with the Bills the past two seasons at left tackle.

He’s 6-foot-5, 311 pounds. He played in 11 games before he missed the last 5 games with a season-ending knee injury. Bell was a seventh-round pick in 2008.

Brooks is 6-foot-5, 343 pounds. He didn’t get an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine but performed well at Miami’s Pro Day and Nolan, Stanford’s starting long snapper from 2008-2010.

Here’s a scouting report on Brooks. Click HERE.
