Steelers plan to place Mendenhall, Hampton on PUP

Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall tore his right ACL on January 1 and underwent surgery two weeks later. Steelers defensive tackle Casey Hampton joined Mendenhall in the ACL-tear club one week later and had his left knee ligament reconstructed on January 27. While both players have expressed optimism about their availability for the 2012 season,…

Steelers’ Ziggy Hood expected to start in place of Aaron Smith

The Steelers cut long time veteran Aaron Smith, who had played 13 years with the team, this offseason, opening up a starting job on the defensive line. The Steelers were prepared for this day as they spent 2 first round picks on defensive linemen, Ziggy Hood and Cameron Heyward, in the 2009 and 2011 NFL Draft respectively, with Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel getting up there in age.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Hood has the inside track on the starting job. Hood has seen a good amount of the field over the past 2 seasons with Smith hurt, but graded out as the league’s worst 3-4 defensive end last year according to ProFootballFocus. The Steelers seem to be banking on Hood, who is still young, bouncing back in 2012 in what would be his first full season as a starter. Heyward is still in the competition and would step in if Hood continues to struggle, but the Steelers obviously hope Hood can pan out and Heyward can be the starter opposite him in 2013, when Keisel, 34 in Sept...

Some interesting news Monday night via Jason La Canfora on Twitter as he reports the Pittsburgh Steelers had a draft day trade in place with the New York Jets to move up to the 16th spot in the first round to select guard David DeCastro. According to a tweet by La Canfora, the Jets were willing to move back to the Steelers spot at 24 thinking they would be able to select either Bruce Irvin or Quinton Coples. Once the Seattle Seahawks selected Irvin with the 15th overall selection, the Jets reportedly backed out of the deal and went ahead and drafted Coples reports La Canfora.

Colorado Springs A Gathering Place For Steelers Fans

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KDKA) — Steeler fans live everywhere – including Broncos territory.

Fans of the Black and Gold pack the Dublin House in Colorado Springs, Colo., whenever the Steelers are in action.

“Everybody’s yelling, ‘Here we go Steelers!’” Bill Lehman, a North Canton, Ohio, native, said. “You would think you were in the stadium as noisy as it is, it’s great!”

Colorado Springs is a Steeler nation hotbed.

“I think it has to do with all the military that’s around here,” Dion Julian, an Oakwood native, said.

Eric Shaw has shown his Steelers pride around the world with the military, but it’s not always easy.

“With a wife from Baltimore, it’s a lot more difficult than it should be,” he said.

The Dublin House is full of amenities from the ‘Burgh to make this place home year-round and you won’t find a lot of respect here for Bronco’s QB Tim Tebow.

“He’s still back in college,” Mimi Schwab, a Rochester native, said. “Ben is the true NFL quarterback.”

The Dublin House will contribute two busloads of fans to the crowd at Mile High, joining the Steeler fans arriving from Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh fans also gather at the Overtime Bar.

“It’s about 150 to 200 people in there and it’s all family everybody whether you’re from Pittsburgh or you are just a Steelers fan you all fit into the same bucket,” Willie Kalaskie, from Peters Township, said.

Terry and Tim Ryan, both from Gibsonia, will be in Mile High Stadium on Sunday.

“Steeler fans are there in abundance, so you feel right at home,” Terry said.

Steelers Set to Take Over First Place if Chargers can Handle Ravens at Home on Sunday Night Football

An interesting day, to say the least, in the National Football League. I'll share my thoughts on the Week 15 action after the completion of the day's final game, a huge AFC clash between the San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Ravens. I love the Chargers tonight. Let me get that one on the record before kickoff here in 15 minutes or so. With the Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos both losing, the Chargers could find themselves just one game behind Denver for first place in the AFC West. Would it really be all that wacky to see the Chargers come back and win the division given all the crazy things that we've seen through the first 15 weeks of the 2011 season? Not really.

Let's use this thread to comment on the day's action, and as an open thread for tonight's pivotal game between San Diego and Baltimore. With a Chargers win, the Steelers would be in first place in the AFC North for at least 24 hours or so before taking on San Francisco Monday night. Were the Ravens to lose, perhaps the Steelers decide to sit Ben Roethlisberger tomorrow night. Who knows though, maybe Big Ben would play if there's an opening to control their own destiny for a first round bye and potential top overall seed in the conference.

Go Chargers!

Ravens Take Back 1st Place In AFC North

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — The Baltimore Ravens took back first place in the AFC North from the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday with a 31-24 win against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Pittsburgh previously held a 0.5-game lead over both the Ravens and Bengals going into the weekend, but Baltimore’s win coupled with Pittsburgh’s bye pushes the Steelers back to second in the division.

Baltimore has complete control over the division at this point, owning tiebreakers over the Steelers and Bengals. The Ravens have yet to lose an AFC North game, meaning it’s their division to lose.

The Steelers will need help in order to win the AFC North in the form of at least one Baltimore loss the rest of the season. The Ravens’ schedule is relatively light the rest of the way, aside from a Thanksgiving night matchup against the San Francisco 49ers Thursday and a season-ending game at Cincinnati — both would be playoff teams if the playoffs started today.

Pittsburgh has games against Cincinnati (Dec. 4) and San Francisco (Dec. 19) as well. Those two opponents could decide the division between Pittsburgh and Baltimore.

Here are the current AFC North standings with six weeks remaining in the regular season…

AFC North Standings:
Baltimore Ravens — 7-3 overall, 3-0 division
Pittsburgh Steelers — 7-3 overall, 1-2 division
Cincinnati Bengals — 6-4 overall, 1-2 division
Cleveland Browns — 4-6 overall, 0-1 division
