Adams Still Playing Catch-Up After Missing OTA’s

Offensive tackle Mike Adams, the Steelers’ second-round pick in April, was still at Ohio State for most of the Steelers’ organized team activity (OTA) practice sessions in May and June due to an NFL rule that keeps rookies away until their schools have completed classes. With Ohio State on the quarter system, Adams was in Columbus and trying to keep up with what was happening in Pittsburgh, Zac Jackson of FOXSports Ohio reports.

“As a rookie you’re always learning, so I definitely have work to do.”

Adams was suspended for the first five games of his final college season for his role in the memorabilia scandal that led to the ouster of Jim Tressel at Ohio State. He returned and started at left tackle, then performed well at the Senior Bowl. Despite a positive marijuana test at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, the Steelers selected Adams in the second round. And despite missing all 10 OTA practices, he lined up with the first-team offense at the all-important left tackle position in the Steelers’ June full-squad minicamp.

“To start right away is definitely a goal, but I’m trying to just learn and be ready to contribute, help this team any way I can,” Adams said. “We have one goal in Pittsburgh and that’s to win a Super Bowl, so it’s my job to just do whatever I have to do to help that.”

“First and foremost, from what I’ve seen so far it’s an organization committed to excellence,” Adams said. “There are a lot of great people from the players in the locker room to the people upstairs. It’s a good fit for me.”

Pittsburgh Steelers end OTAs, prepare for mandatory mini-camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up their OTA sessions today and are now focused on next week’s mandatory mini-camp. For some players like rookies David DeCastro, Mike Adams and Alameda Ta’amu, this will be the first time since the rookie-camp for these potential starters. Yes, they have had their playbooks, but there is no way to build chemistry with teammates without being around to learn the system together. While these three rookies will make their debut of sorts at mini-camp, fans should still not expect to see wide receiver Mike Wallace, who has still not signed his RFA tender. Of course, next week is a big week on that front, as the Steelers could potentially reduce his tender to the league minimum, which would cost Wallace roughly $ 2.2 million. Will they do that? No, they won’t do that, as they are reportedly in long-term contract discussions with Wallace and that really is not the Steeler-Way, but it will remain a possibility if this drags into the regular season.

Don’t read too much into the Steelers OTA’s

The 2nd week of OTA’s for the Steelers this offseason raises more questions than answers. Honestly, that’s how it should be. These organized team activities are not training camp. This is not the time that you set your starting lineups for the coming season. It’s not a time to nail down your starting rotation on the offensive line, defensive line, or any other position.
Still, like clockwork each year, everyone loves to read into this part of the offseason and speculate what’s going to happen. I can’t tell you how many blog entries I’ve read over the last 2 weeks, some I greatly respect and others I have zero respect for, that are trying to figure out who’s starting where and when. If you know us here at SA you know who we’re talking about in that statement.
I don’t care what your name is or who you work for, trying to figure out the OTA’s can be a confusing ordeal. Inevitably you’re going to come to a consensus with ...
