Ravens Take Back 1st Place In AFC North

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — The Baltimore Ravens took back first place in the AFC North from the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday with a 31-24 win against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Pittsburgh previously held a 0.5-game lead over both the Ravens and Bengals going into the weekend, but Baltimore’s win coupled with Pittsburgh’s bye pushes the Steelers back to second in the division.

Baltimore has complete control over the division at this point, owning tiebreakers over the Steelers and Bengals. The Ravens have yet to lose an AFC North game, meaning it’s their division to lose.

The Steelers will need help in order to win the AFC North in the form of at least one Baltimore loss the rest of the season. The Ravens’ schedule is relatively light the rest of the way, aside from a Thanksgiving night matchup against the San Francisco 49ers Thursday and a season-ending game at Cincinnati — both would be playoff teams if the playoffs started today.

Pittsburgh has games against Cincinnati (Dec. 4) and San Francisco (Dec. 19) as well. Those two opponents could decide the division between Pittsburgh and Baltimore.

Here are the current AFC North standings with six weeks remaining in the regular season…

AFC North Standings:
Baltimore Ravens — 7-3 overall, 3-0 division
Pittsburgh Steelers — 7-3 overall, 1-2 division
Cincinnati Bengals — 6-4 overall, 1-2 division
Cleveland Browns — 4-6 overall, 0-1 division

Steelers’ Mundy & Batch Help Local Needy Families Ahead Of Thanksgiving

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — It’s a bye week for the Pittsburgh Steelers; but for a couple members of the team, this Sunday meant a day of giving back to the community as they handed out turkeys and all the fixings to 100 families in need.

It was all part of the Dignity & Respect program at the Rankin Christian Center, it’s where Steelers safety Ryan Mundy grew up.

“I’m just giving back,” said Mundy. “This is the school district that I grew up in. It’s always good to get out and give back and interact in the community.”

Mundy brought a buddy along with him – another hometown kid who grew up to play for the Steelers – backup quarterback Charlie Batch.

“We’re just trying to do our small part to help out the families throughout the holiday season, and it’s really a small token of appreciation,” said Batch.

It’s part of an effort to provide 100 needy families with turkeys and all the trimmings. Holiday dinners they may have gone without.

“It just relieves a burden that a lot of people face and they don’t know how they are going to pull it all together and make a beautiful meal for their families,” said Ondrea Burton, of the Dignity & Respect Campaign.

Besides getting a Thanksgiving dinner, the needy families also got some Steelers autographs.

The Rankin Christian Center provides a variety of services to families in need.

Chiefs QB Palko Looks Forward To NFL Start

PITTSBURGH (93-7 THE FAN) — Former Pitt Quarterback and Kansas City Chiefs backup Tyler Palko will get his first start in the NFL this week after starter Matt Cassell went down with an injury. He joined Bob Pompeani Saturday on 93-7 The Fan to talk about it.

Palko has worked hard throughout his career and now he finally gets his chance. This is not an easy start for him as it will be this Monday night against the New England Patriots. He then moves on to play the Pittsburgh Steelers next week in Kansas City.

But Palko is excited for the challenge and looks forward to playing against some really good teams and defenses.

The former Panthers QB is surrounded by western Pennsylvania receivers in Kansas City (Jonathan Baldwin and Steve Breaston), and he enjoys the local connection and hopes to be able to get the ball to them as much as possible.

Steelers WR Jerricho Cotchery Discusses Moving Up Depth Chart

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — Steelers Wide Receiver Jerricho Cotchery joined Seibel, Starkey and Miller on Sportsradio 93.7 The FAN to talk about his expanding role on the team.

It has appeared as though Cotchery is replacing Hines Ward in a number of formations, and he told us what that feels like, and how Ward has been there helping him along the entire time.

When asked where he seems himself on the depth chart, Cotchery said he just views himself as another guy trying to help the team win, and Mike Tomlin creates an environment where everyone feels important does what they’re asked to.

We also talked about the offense running the no huddle, and how Jerricho enjoys running that form of the offense, and why the Steelers having an elite Quarterback makes it easier to run.

We wrapped things up with Cotchery discussing whether or not the Steelers view themselves as the team to beat in the AFC.

Steelers Safety Ryan Clark Looks Back At Bengals, Ahead To Bye

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — Andrew Fillipponi is once again joined live at Nakama by Steelers safety Ryan Clark.

Ryan’s favorite part of the bye week is that he cannot be fined for his dynamic hits.  Ryan is traveling to Louisiana to be a dad.  It’s tough to completely get away from football during the bye.

Ryan relates a conversation that he had with an official to the effect that they will throw a flag on a play if it is close to being illegal.

Ryan hopes that his LSU Tigers get a shot at another championship.

William Gay stepped up against the Bengals and proved his reliability.

Ryan finds Keisel’s beard more impressive than Troy’s hair.  Women do not know what they want.   You cannot judge a book by its cover.  Andy Dalton still has a lot to learn.

Roethlisberger Breaks Thumb, Not Expected To Miss Time

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Steelers are on a bye this week. As it turns out, the timing could not be any better.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger announced that he has a broken thumb, but does not expect to miss any time.

“We’ll put a splint on it and get prepared for the game against Kansas City just like we would if we were playing this week,” Roethlisberger said.

The broken thumb is on his throwing hand, which he also broke during the 2005 season.

Listen to the full interview here:

“Luckily, we have the bye week. I don’t have to throw right now. I don’t have to throw for seven days or [whenever we have to practice again.] So, that will be a good time for it to rest. The big thing is just getting used to throwing with a splint on it again and a glove on, which I’ve done before,” Roethlisberger said.

Roethlisberger suffered the injury during the Steelers’ 24-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

He said it did hurt to throw, but the biggest problem was squeezing the ball.

Bengals Beat Writer Joe Reedy Breaks Down Team’s Loss, Marvin Lewis Reaction

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — Cincinnati Enquirer Bengals Beat Writer Joe Reedy joined Seibel, Starkey and Miller to discuss the Steelers’ win over the Bengals, and Head Coach Marvin Lewis’ postgame comments in which he made it sound like the Bengals had come away with some sort of moral victory.

Reedy said there was something to take from the Bengals loss in that they were down 14-0, and past teams would have just packed it in, but this team stayed resilient and made it a game.
