Legal Analyst Examines Defamation Lawsuit Against Roger Goodell

*** Discuss this article and more at our Pittsburgh Steelers forum ***

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — Director of Sports Law Institute at Vermont Law School and Sports Illustrated Legal Analyst Michael McCann joined Seibel, Starkey and Miller on Sportsradio 93-7 The FAN to discuss the recent defamation lawsuit Saints Linebacker Jonathan Vilma has filed against NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Vilma has claimed that his reputation has been tarnished by what the commissioner has said about him when it comes to the bounties the Saints had against opposing teams, and is hoping that the suit will get to the point where the league will have to reveal the evidence they have implicating his involvement in the bounties.

McCann isn’t sure that the case will actually make it to trial because of rules written into the CBA although bringing the case in front of a Louisiana courtroom as Vilma has done may help his cause.

We also got McCann to give us his thoughts on the progression of the Jerry Sandusky case and where things currently stand.

Mendenhall moves forward with lawsuit

Rashard Mendenhall’s lawsuit is apparently moving forward now after a judge ruled that he’s at least got a legitimate gripe against Champion for canceling his endorsement contract. As the article indicates below, the sports world and celebrities everywhere will be watching this case unfold. Should Mendenhall ultimately win this case it could definitely affect future cases where companies who endorse players find they have less ground to terminate contracts in cases like this.
Whether or not you agree with the tweets that started this controversy, those in the public eye are always under a higher level of scrutiny than the rest of us. If John Q. Public tweets this thoughts to the world, nobody gives it anything more than a shake of the head and maybe a quick “is he nuts” thought.
With Rashard still recovering from knee surgery this offseason, he’ll have plenty of time to plan his case with his attorneys. Win or lose though, this case will bring more pr...

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall seems to have won round one in his attempt to sue athletic apparel company Champion, who is owned by Hanesbrands, for breech of contract.

The company ended its sponsorship relationship with Mendenhall following his controversial remarks made on Twitter after the death of Osama bin Laden. Mendenhall stated in those tweets that he thought no one should celebrate the death of bin Laden, and he also questioned whether the collapse of the World Trade Center towers on 9/11 was really caused by terrorist hijackings.

Roethlisberger Settles 2008 Rape Case Lawsuit

*** Discuss this article and more at our Pittsburgh Steelers forum ***

A settlement has been reached in the 2008 rape case against Ben Roethlisberger. Reports tonight indicate that Roethlisberger and Andrea McNulty reached a deal.

Both McNulty and Roethlisberger’s lawyers wouldn’t discuss the case, so there’s no word about if any money changed hands, but it’s probably a pretty good bet.

In 2008, Roethlisberger was accused of raping McNulty, a former Harrah’s Lake Tahoe casino host.

That was the first time that Ben was accused of assault against a woman. Again in 2010, Roethlisberger faced accusations of sexual assault at a college bar in Georgia. Charges were never filed after an investigation by police.
