Roethlisberger would play in Ireland for Rooney

We’ve previously heard from players grousing about playing in London, with some saying saying they’d rather quit than have to go there on a regular basis, and some Jaguars acknowledging multiple games would hurt them. But if it was just one game, and it was in Dublin, Ben Roethlisberger said the Steelers would be all-in.…ProFootballTalk » Pittsburgh Steelers

Dublin’s Croke Park pushing for NFL game in Ireland

The news that the NFL will play two games at Wembley Stadium in London next year came as a disappointment to some in Ireland, who thought that if the NFL was ready for a second game across the pond, it should have been at Croke Park in Dublin. Croke Park, a stadium that seats 82,300…ProFootballTalk » Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers and NFL weighing option of playing a regular season game in Ireland

*** Discuss this article and more at our Pittsburgh Steelers forum ***

In this down period of Pittsburgh Steelers news, it is amazing the stories that can make headlines. Interesting enough, the latest story to create a buzz is more about future scheduling, vice being player related. That question, could Steelers play a regular-season game in Ireland?Absolutely, and they should. Of course, that game should be against a franchise that struggles in attendance during home games instead of at the expense of the rabid Heinz Field crowd. Evidently, Dan Rooney agrees, and has gone as far as visiting Dublin’s Croke Park with NFL Officials to determine the feasibility.

In an interview with BBC News Rooney states, “I think sometime very soon it will happen and I think the commissioner is interested in working something out and, sure, I’d like to see the Steelers involved.” This idea should not come, as a surprise to any Steelers fan considering that next to Pittsburgh, Ireland may be the international heart of the Steelers franchise, with Roo…

Could the Steelers Find Their Way to Playing a Game in Ireland?

The NFL for whatever reason keeps trying to push games overseas. The Steelers have ties to Ireland, and the BBC wrote a quick piece about how the Steelers may find their way into playing a game there due to Dan Rooney.

Notre Dame playing in Ireland made for a perfect match, but, with Dan Rooney’s role as Ambassador to Ireland, the idea of the Steelers playing in the Emerald Isle might pick up steam. Since 2005, the NFL has played a regular season game — a competitive mid-season match rather than a friendly or pre-season game — at Wembley Stadium in London, in front of enthusiastic crowds of around 80,000 each time. It’s an experiment set to continue in October, when the New England Patriots will face the St Louis Rams. The success and appeal of this ‘exported’ fixture means that other cities now clamour to host a game, and with the NFL now considering a second fixture overseas, Dublin is emerging as a prime candidate.

Steelers Rumored For Game In Ireland In 2013

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — According to a report by the BBC, the NFL has a desire to expand a regular season game into Ireland and the Steelers could be involved.

The league has played a regular season game at London’s Wembley Stadium since 2005 and it will continue that tradition this season. With the success of playing games in London, the NFL reportedly wants to extend a second regular season game into another European city, perhaps Dublin.

Dublin’s Croke Park seats over 80,000 fans and with the connection of Steelers owner Dan Rooney as the U.S. Ambassador to Ireland, the Steelers playing in this game makes sense.

“I think it’d be terrific,” Rooney said to the BBC in regards to an NFL game coming to Dublin.

“We came over before back in 1997 and played a pre-season game.

“But now, with the regular season games in London at Wembley proving so successful, and tickets selling out almost as soon as they’re put on sale, I would think it would be good to play a game here, at Croke Park, as the interest in the sport is so strong.”

Discussion of regular season game in Ireland crops up again

Back in January 2011, there was some speculation that the Steelers would be playing a regular season game in Dublin later that year. That never came to pass, but the idea of bringing a game to the Emerald Isle never went away. The BBC reports that the NFL came to Croke Park in Dublin this…
