*** Discuss this article and more at our Pittsburgh Steelers forum ***

The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up their mandatory mini-camp on Thursday and General Manager Kevin Colbert joined 105.9 The X afterwards to answer several questions.

One of the questions that Colbert was asked pertained to free agent tackle Max Starks, who continues to rehab his surgically repaired right knee after tearing his ACL in the AFC Wild Card Game against the Denver Broncos. Colbert was specifically asked if Starks was still considered as an option in 2012 as a backup. "Yeah, we've communicated with Max. He was in here about a month ago to get examined by our doctors," said Colbert. Read more [...]

Pittsburgh Steelers Wide Receiver Emmanuel Sanders is Healthy, Looking to Breakout in 2012

As the Pittsburgh Steelers inch closer to mini-camp, there is still no resolution to the contract situation between the team and stay wide receiver Mike Wallace. While this is unfortunate, it may actually be a benefit for some members of the wide out corps.
One player who is looking to capitalize on the absence with some added reps is third-year wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders (SMU).Sanders is an intriguing talent, who is looking to rebound from an injury riddled and subpar 2011 campaign and this opening may be all that he needs.
Looking back at his early career, it is interesting that during their rookie campaigns, Sanders was entrenched higher on the depth chart than last years team MVP Antonio Brown.
During that season, Sanders had worked his way up the depth chart to the number three role that season finishing with 28 receptions for 376 yards and 2 touchdowns.
However, when he injured his foot during the Super Bowl at the end of the 2010 season, little did anyone know that injury...

Report: Mike Tomlin Worried About Ability Of Emmanuel Sanders & Willie Colon To Stay Healthy

If you have read this site for a while or are a long time listener of the podcast, you know that I have long been worried about the feet of Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders ever since his second surgery. As I have stated before, you never like to hear about young player having problems with their feet early on in their careers, especially if they play a skill position like running back or wide receiver.

Head Coach Mike Tomlin announced on Tuesday from the NFL owners meetings that he too has fears similar to mine when it comes to Sanders and his ability to stay healthy. Ed Bouchette Read more [...]

Marcus Gilbert almost fully healthy from shoulder surgery

Steelers offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert has almost recovered fully from surgery.  Gilbert had surgery on his should after the season ended.  Gilbert tweeted that was almost back to full speed.  That is good to hear.  Gilbert still has plenty of time to recover but the fact that he is almost back is great news.
Gilbert may have a more important role this season.  As a rookie he started 13 games at right tackle.  This season he may take over as the Left Tackle protecting Ben Roethlisberger’s blind side.  This is the position that Gilbert played in Florida.  Willie Colon will be back in his role at right tackle which is what will cause the move of Gilbert over to the left side.
Gilbert had a pretty good year for a rookie second round pick forced into the starting line up.  Guys who are great players in the NFL on the offensive line struggled in their first season.  Gilbert is already ahead of the curve.  He will have to work to be ready for the left side but he can handle it.

Report: Healthy Mendenhall unlikely

The Steelers do not expect running back Rashard Mendenhall to be fully recovered until the 2013 NFL season as he continues to mend following a torn anterior cruciate ligament, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Monday, citing sources.

The 2012 season will be the final year of his contract, and it is reportedly possible Mendenhall has had his last carry with the team.

The sources said that if Mendenhall does return next season, the Steelers do not expect him to perform at the level he was at before he succumbed to the injury, while playing against the Browns in their last game of the 2011 regular season.

Despite the concern, the team is still unlikely to re-sign free agent Mewelde Moore, according to the report. That would likely leave the team with Isaac Redman as its starter. Redman, a fourth-year player, has started only one NFL game and has 726 rushing yards and three touchdowns in 163 career carries.

Mendenhall finished with 928 rushing yards and nine touchdowns last season.
