Pittsburgh Steelers Minicamp: Trai Essex Starts at Right Tackle, Marcus Gilbert at Left Tackle

One day down, one offensive line permutation in place.

Affixed with a heavily emphasized “subject to change” tag, veteran Trai Essex opened the Steelers‘ minicamp at right tackle, with Marcus Gilbert opening at left tackle. It’s highly likely at some point over the next two days rookie Mike Adams will get reps with the first time at either or both tackle positions.

But for now, he’ll fight his way up to that position.

Post-Gazette reporter Gerry Dulac quoted Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin as saying, “We’re going to do things to put them in situations to see how they respond. I wouldn’t read into it, particularly football in shorts. We’re going to put them in situations against good people just for exposure and learn more about them. That’s down the line when you start reading into what group they’re taking snaps with. That’s going to be more of a Latrobe type of thing.”

Maurkice Pouncey (center), Willie Colon (left guard) and Ramon Foster (right guard) rounded out the Football-in-Shorts First-Team offensive line, meaning rookie David DeCastro joined Adams in watching the first team work.

It’s a certainty DeCastro will assume the right guard position at some point very soon, and will likely remain there through Week 1 and probably for the next 12 years.

That shouldn’t downplay the roles of Essex or Foster this year. The fact they are in those first team positions (whether or not fully clothed) shows they opened a step ahead of OT Jonathan Scott and OG Doug Legursky, respectfully.

If the Steelers had the depth it now has at offensive line, they may have been able to win a few more games the last few seasons.

Considering they’ve been to the playoffs in three of the last four seasons, and have won two AFC championships and a Super Bowl, it’s a pretty good thing.

Steelers’ Pouncey, Gilbert Visit McKeesport Middle School

McKEESPORT (KDKA) — Some local middle school students have been working for weeks to get fit, and today, their efforts were rewarded.

The kids from Founder’s Hall Middle School in McKeesport have been taking part in the NFL Play 60 Challenge.

The program, sponsored by the American Heart Association and the NFL, is aimed at getting kids active.

“They have to get 60 minutes of activity throughout the day, they have to get 30 minutes in school and 30 minutes out of school,” said Brian Dececco, a teacher.

“It was kind of easy for me because I play basketball and we have practice just about every day,” said eighth grader, E’Dazjia Solomon-Green.

They completed the challenge, and as a reward, the Steelers’ Maurkice Pouncey and Marcus Gilbert paid a special visit to the school. They talked to the students about being fit, and then it was time to burn some calories.

The players took the kids through some of their pregame drills, using ladders and jump ropes.

“It’s always good to give back in the community and show our faces because they love watching us on Sundays. Why not give back, show our faces and help them in the right direction,” said Gilbert.

“Just to interact with others, to play around, get a good sweat going on. I mean obesity is a big thing these days, so just to get the kids running around and active and stuff,” added Pouncey.

The students say getting an hour of activity a day was no problem, and many plan to continue that. They also say the effort was well worth a visit from these guys.

“It’s not every day that you get to see people that play for the NFL or any professional sport,” said Lamaar McKamey, an eighth grader.

Marcus Gilbert to stay at Right Tackle and Mike Adams gets first shot at Left Tackle

Ed Bouchette is reporting that Marcus Gilbert will remain on the right side where he belongs.  That means rookie OT Mike Adams will be placed on the left side.  The Steelers told Willie Colon he was moving to left guard with full intentions of making Adams the Left Tackle.
This makes the most sense.  Gilbert is a better right tackle then he is a left.  Adams is built to play left tackle.  This team will be better for this.  They have all preseason and training camp to get ready to play together.  This group may spend more time on the field then usual in the preseason just to get some chemistry.
So your Steelers starting offensive line going into training camp is:

LT- Mike Adams
LG- Willie Colon
C- Maurkice Pouncey
RG- David DeCastro
RT- Marcus Gilbert

Marcus Gilbert almost fully healthy from shoulder surgery

Steelers offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert has almost recovered fully from surgery.  Gilbert had surgery on his should after the season ended.  Gilbert tweeted that was almost back to full speed.  That is good to hear.  Gilbert still has plenty of time to recover but the fact that he is almost back is great news.
Gilbert may have a more important role this season.  As a rookie he started 13 games at right tackle.  This season he may take over as the Left Tackle protecting Ben Roethlisberger’s blind side.  This is the position that Gilbert played in Florida.  Willie Colon will be back in his role at right tackle which is what will cause the move of Gilbert over to the left side.
Gilbert had a pretty good year for a rookie second round pick forced into the starting line up.  Guys who are great players in the NFL on the offensive line struggled in their first season.  Gilbert is already ahead of the curve.  He will have to work to be ready for the left side but he can handle it.
