Miami has announced the termination of head coach Tony Sparano, making him the second AFC head coach to lose his job today.
Chiefs coach Todd Haley was fired earlier.
Sparano started the 2011 season 0-7, but had a revival of sorts, winning three straight games in the middle of the year. The Dolphins fell back down to earth, losing two of their next three games including Sunday’s 26-10 beating by Philadelphia.
Secondary coach Todd Bowles will be the Dolphins interim head coach.
Sparano, the hand-selected coach by former Dolphins Executive Vice President of Football Operations Bill Parcells, is 28-32 in four years with the Dolphins, having won the AFC East championship in 2008.
The Dolphins were 11-5 in that surprising season, one year removed from a 1-15 record. They have not finished over .500 since then.
Much like Haley’s termination, the news wasn’t unexpected. Sparano himself was caught on tape in the fourth quarter of the Dolphins 18-15 loss to Denver in Week 7 making mention to an assistant that they were all going to be fired after the game.
In that time, though, the Dolphins played tough and didn’t appear to be problems with their coach. That trend changed recently, particularly after a less-than-inspiring performance against the Eagles in Week 14.
