They know damn well when they reach in their pocketbook it's going to register.
It's a joke, they walk around with chump change and expect to buy a Benz.

It's hard to get big name FA's when their already tight against the cap. I'm assuming this is nothing more than doing their due diligence. Plus, they've been pretty successful in the past by taking flyers on guys that nobody heard of and they turn into productive players. They're not being cheap, they're being smart.
Every year, for as long as message boards have been around, there are those who lament the Steelers approach to free agency. It's not a farce if they're consistent, which they are. The Steelers always approach free agency looking for a bargain. Someone who can contribute without breaking the bank. That's it. Period. Otherwise, they build through the draft and try to re-sign their own when they can.
What's a farce about that ?
Is it realistic to expect the Steelers to sign players like Dumervil or a Jake Long?
That's what I was referring to, why would they consider players like them when they are strapped by the Cap.
We signed Grabowski and Spaeth which is understandable given the limited amount they can spend, but when I see the higher profile players of interest the money just isn't there.
They can weigh improvements. Would having Dumerville at OLB be an improvement to the team if it took cutting Ike or Troy or Clark or Keisel? Would it be worth them extending Ben a season or two and restructuring his deal? They can add a player with a higher price tag, but they would have to make other moves to do it.

We all know the Steelers are not real players in FA. They show interest for various reasons...to motivate current players, to appease fans, drive up prices, to confuse draft day scenerios etc. There is plenty of secondary gain by being falsely interested in FAs they know they can't make a play for.
Trolls are people too.
Why not ask? Creating buzz around a player can help his agent drive up the asking price... never a bad thing when the eventual signer is Baltimore, Denver, or some other rival. Doesn't hurt at all. And besides - Duce Staley's sweat suit has been empty for several years now. We need somebody to step into that vital role standing next to Coach Tomlin the way Duce did for Cowher. Dipping back into the free agent pool could bring us another signing of that kind of quality!
Maybe they are gaging the price for Dumervil and or Freeney to see if they should bring back Harrison at a fair price for his position and value.
At OT you still have Vollmer, Andre Smith, Albert now, Max, and McKinnie still out there.
Pass rushers are Dumervil, Freeney, Harrison, Abraham, Umienyora.
Even corners, we lost Lewis but there are still Grimes, Winfield, Nnamdi, and even guys like Huff and Jenkins.
Running backs remaining are Bradshaw, Turner, Stephens-Howling, Felix Jones.
We won't sign them all, and there are not any stars remaining, but maybe, just maybe, there is someone out there who can be had at a reasonable price.
There is still some decent talent out there and
